Grand Prix: The Killer Years
Any racing fan no matter your age needs to watch this show. On a channel I hadn't heard of till tonight (Velocity, produced by Discovery). Very well done, moving story about Grand Prix racing in the 60s and 70s. Even if you are a student of the era, it still leaves you breathless at what those drivers risked...
http://blogs.discovery.com/velocity/...%28Velocity%29 On again tonight at 1am EST (channel 281 for the DirecTV subs.)

Very sad and important documentary..
Some of the best drivers gave their lives to finally have safety in the sport..the apathy about driver deaths during that era was just unreal compared to now. |

Yeah, saw it last night. Interesting how driver (even spectator) safety was not even a consideration...how things have changed.
A great tribute to the great drivers that came before. Another great documentary is "Senna" about the F1 circuit during this same era. Cheers!

I saw it too. I knew a lot about this from talking to Mario and his wife (yes, Andretti). I'm standing next to Mario in my avatar at his headquarters in Nazareth, PA.
They said you really didn't want to get too close to other drivers (friendship wise) because you never knew when someone was going to get killed. Case in point, Ronnie Peterson who was Mario's teammate in 1978 for Lotus.

A couple decades from now people may be saying similar things about how cavalier everyone was about concussions and brain injuries. The risk isn't as obvious as a firey crash, but the idea that you would constatntly risk your life (or mind) doing a sport will seem pretty reckless.
