Got into a wreck tonight
Well,
I was rear ended in my E90 tonight. I was completely stopped and got hit at roughly 40 mph by a Jeep. Got carted off to the ER with no significant injuries to report. Now to the important part. Immediately after the accident, my car had a warning message stating that there was a fault in the restraint system or something similar to that. I'm a little concerned at the current state of my car since I didn't even get a chance to see the damage since I was hanging out on a stretcher. I remember that it wouldn't start and just kept displaying that message. I assumed that I only had cosmetic issues to deal with but is this something major that I have to worry about? Sorry if this has been covered. I tried to search but I'm still a little fuzzy from everything. |

its hard to tell without pictures, but empirically things don't look good with a 40mph rear collision. i would have to imagine massive damage. glad you're alright

if you got rear ended by an SUV at 40mph...car is totaled...i don't see any car that can stand up to that kind of force. Unless 40mph is not really 40mph...did she attempt to brake at all?

If you were getting a restraint message then either the airbags malfunctioned? did they go off? or the accident was so hard that it knocked the seatbelt tensioner out of place so the seatbelt assembly would need to get replaced.

More than likely totaled. Which is a good thing, since there is sure to be extensive damage. I have a friend whose insurance didn't total his car. $10k into repairs and it still isn't working right...better to just get a new one.

40 mph collision from a Jeep (3100 lbs to 4800 lbs depending on model) is a lot of force. I'd be surprised if car isn't totaled. Glad you got out of it okay despite the hospital visit.

I was told he was going roughly 40. I honestly have no idea. It was a nasty impact though. I didn't see the car but was just curious about that error message. The airbags didn't deploy but I'm thinking they were supposed to and something went wrong.

Don't the seatbelt pretensioners fire in any crash with some speed behind it? Especially getting hit from behind like that they should have deployed.

The airbags are located in the FRONT and on the SIDES of the E90 - for
impacts to the FRONT and/or SIDE. It would seem reasonable that sensors be located in those areas of the E90 to control the airbag deployment. The doors have air pressure sensors that detect the increase in pressure from a door being crushed. Let's think about it for a bit - which airbag(s) would / should be deployed when a vehicle is impacted from the rear - forcing the occupants deeper INTO their seats? |

Bingo. The active restraint system includes the seatbelt pretensioners, which were triggered during the accident. IF your car is repairable, those will need to be replaced and the code will clear. |

the warning light may be from positive or negative battery cable, which no doubt was impacted by a rear 40mph collision. in any case, you got bigger worries to think of - try to get the car declared total if possible.

Better hope they total it. If you really got it at 40mph your car will never be the same no matter what they do...

This was my same reaction, you talk about the accident and say most importantly my question is about the restraint light? most importantly your okay, definitely talk to a lawyer, you are bound to have future problems if they try to repair the car, and you will probably be very sore for a while.

I agree with the above posters. Glad you are ok and don't worry about the car. It's just metal and plastic. Be glad you are not dead and hope that your injuries are minor. Obviously, it seems as though you have no life threatening injuries, but it can take up to 48 hrs to feel the pain from internal bruising. Rest up and let your insurance co deal with the car. That's what you pay them for.

If it was 40 mph, it's totaled. Pics when you get a chance. Hang in there.

sorry?
if you were @ a complete stop & a jeep rear ended you at 40 mph, your shit is f*cked. a mini cooper could've hit you at 40 mph and b/c your car was basically "parked", it absorbed the full force of the impact. without a doubt, you've got structural damage (bent frame), and the insurance company is gonna want no part of fixing that & something going wrong down the road = car is finished

After talking to my friend today, I don't think the impact was actually at 40 mph. He said that it didn't look too bad cosmetically (just bumper, trunk, etc). He had originally said 40 mph but that might have been the speed the driver said he was going prior to slamming on the brakes. I'm still waiting to go and look at the damage myself.

Glad your okay buddy.
From my knowledge, if the car isn't totalled, it's defintely going to have a frame damage to the car from 40mph impact, especially you were completely stopped. Hope insurance declares your car totalled and gives you money to buy a new one! I would still be scared to drive the car after even if it was repairable to some extent. Goodluck! |
