is my air bag busted?
hi,
just bought this 09 335xi and i noticed crack on the airbag cover. i've looked around and noticed that bmw had recall on some models for airbag cover, does it apply to 09? what are my choices here? can i replace just the cover myself? i'm stomped, i've never had this before even on much older and cheaper cars. thank you for your help. |

Thats likely where it is predesigned to tear when the airbag deploys. It is weaker there than everywhere else.
It wearing through may be a warranty issue or it may be you hitting it too hard. |

It looks like just a scratch on the wheel. Previous owner probably wore a ring and scuffed it |

How does the cover being scuffed mean the airbag is broken? What is this Canadian logic that you use? I can scratch the shit out of my shift knob but that doesn't mean I still can't change gear.

you are correct.
I should have stated airbag COVER not airbag. It is visual concern I have that it looks worn/broken. I'm sure the functionality of the airbag is not affected but I can't stand looking at the steering wheel like that. I would like to change the cover only if possible but I can't find anyone who's done it for some guidance |

If you cannot stand the perceived eyesore then you have to pay to get it replaced. plain and simple. You cannot just replace the airbag cover, it is one unit, you cannot just remove the cover and re-stuff the airbag in there.
You can trying using a vinyl/upholstery repair kit and fill in the crack but it may also compromise the integrity of the cover and the way it was designed to deploy. Buy a new one and sell that unit to offset the cost...that is of course if anyone is willing to buy it. |

It's just a cover that clips on to the actual airbag unit. You can find covers on ebay. Replace at your own risk though, obviously.
