335i 6MT Flywheel Chatter

Hello!

Maybe you are able to help me out...

The car is 335i, brand new, some 4k km on it.
The thing is that when I shut down the engine with the cluch not pressed in, there is some shatter coming out from the clutch/trunny area. The sound is exactly like this:

When you press the clutch in, there is no noise.
When the engine is cold, there is no noise (most of the cases) regardless of the position of the clutch.

The same noise comes out if I want to move forward and don't rev up enought. Sometimes even on the second gear.

I tried to search different forums. "Death rattle", " flywheel shatter". The problem is there, long threads, people have it but no definite answer!
Some say (most of them) it's normal, some managed to get rid of that by changing clutch and flywheel.

What do you think?

Thanks!!

Ok, thanks for your input but what is the origin of this noise?
Why do you state that it's normal?

The point is that I wouldn't like this thread to turn into what you can already find on the forums. 20 guys will say it's normal and some that they managed to fix it. I know it already.

I would like find out why it's normal and I would like to believe it, before my warranty expires.
I have driven quite a few cars so far, all with MT and this is the first time I hear this kind of noise that loud.

Thanks!

Its normal. I had the same concern you did so I talked to a BMW master tech and he said it's only with the manual and it is just how the dual mass flywheel operates.

Yes, it's normal and nothing to worry about.
I had it on my old Mercedes W202 5MT too.

Mine does it as well, except now when I have the clutch in, i feel a fairly bad vibration threw the pedal now. Just started noticing it recently, and only once the cars warm.

How f#$@ed am i?

Yep, its the two parts of the dual mass flywheel moving around due to the engine slowing down against the inertia of the transmission. When you shut off while holding the clutch in, it disconnects the flywheel from the transmission so you don't get that sound.

Cannot say I've heard a noise of any sort but have noticed a slight vibration/juddering at the engagement point. Seems to happen when it's very cold like during the winter months and goes away once the car warms up.

Thanks guys. That makes me feel better or at least I know that it's pretty common.

If I have time I will go one day to visit some big German BMW dealer. Let's see what they would say about it.
I will let you know if I find something interesting.

I've had the same noise. Some people have said it is the pilot bearing or throw out bearing. Some people say normal. I'm not about to spend money to tear it down when it engages perfectly.

Hi,

There are a few threads on this topic. Search for dual-mass flywheel and you'll get some good information.

What you are hearing is the dual-mass flywheel components rattling against each other as well as a resonance effect between the flywheel and the input shaft of the gearbox. This is indeed normal, unfortunately.

Regards.

Both my e30 and e36 M3's had noise at idle when in neutral.
Turning on the AC (lowering the revs a bit) made it worse.
Above ~1400 RPM no noise.

I'd say as long as it's a chattering sound and not grinding, it's okay and normal.

I went from a Honda Accord to my 335i 6spd. I was alarmed at all the new noises but it's normal. so is the nice noise doing a 0-120 mph pull

What if it IS a grinding sound? I've got a subtle metallic grinding coming from the front end that I can feel through the shifter.

this happens to me almost every time I get into first while being conservative with the gas. also, just hold the clutch pedal down when you turn your car off and you won't get the sound. should be in gear when you park anyway.

I actually out of habit press the clutch in when starting and stopping any car engine, so have never heard this noise on shut down, but earlier today I intentionally shut the engine down with the clutch out - exactly the same sound! Yep, also hear this on lighter than ideal throttle input on pull-off.

Exclamation Rattle on Shut off

I drive a e92 '09 335 xdrive with 16,000 miles.

I have the same noise (9sec into the video) when shutting off my car without the clutch pressed in. My car is still under warranty so I'm attempting to get it fixed. The BMW dealership claims it's the transfer case (contrary to the consensus of the interwebz). So far they did the following:

Customer Reports:
Customer states that there is a rattling noise when turning off the vehicle with foot off the clutch. If you put the clutch in there is no noise.

Installed 27 10 7 546 671 :set positioning motor 249 confirmed condition and removed lower covers and inspected trans and fly wheel ok performed vehicle test with charger bat at 12.1v found no relevant faults stored, accessed vtg connector and removed and tested found no noise no longer present removed ex

I copied the above from the invoice. I was told they replaced a motor in the transfer case. Contrary to the above, the sound is now worse. I have an appointment next week when BMW wants to replace the transfer case this time.
