6MT - Favorite Gear?
Guys,
What is your favorite gear to use on the 6MT? I like 3rd for its versatility around town. Any particular favorites for getting a nice kick in the pants too? |

I was wondering, wtf is 5th for. Really you can be doing great speed up till top rpm in 4th, you may as well shift to 6th at that point. |

I use 5th on the highway when its moderate traffic going between 45-60ish.
But 2nd or 3rd is probably my favorite. Gives enough punch with a useable range of speed driving around. |

Now don't let the other gears hear you say that you have a favorite. They might get mad and start making you do a money shift.
But really, is it your favorite or is it because it is the gear that the conditions demand? |

My friends and I used to call the best/most fun gear in my STI the "get money gear". In that car is was 3rd or 4th depending on the speed you were traveling.
In my 335 I would say it is 2nd or 3rd. |

You will like all you gears a lot better
You will like all you gears a lot better
If you put Redline D6 in the Transmission as it will smooth out the shifts a lot. |

3rd for sure. All the torque in the world and you can get the back end out on most corners in a track.

I love to cruise in 4th above 25mph on the steptronic. to me it revs high enough to get the kick and low enough for steady low mpg crusing.

I use 5th all the time. Cruising between 60-80mph, downshifting from 6th when I need to get past some slower cars, 4th can be a bit too aggressive and not necessary. But yea 3rd is the most versatile gear, my favorite also. Least favorite is 1st. So hard to drive it smoothly on these cars, and also has no grunt like the N54 has. I lose to automatic Civics off the line because 1st is so weak. I don't really want to have to launch a car in 2nd just to get off the line quickest at a red light. Just want 1st to have some power and it does not. Turbo spools slowly, jerky feeling, lack of get up and go, etc. i need a tune to help address this but frigging Cobb is taking forever. |
