My 2006 e90 330i has the sun roof fault code lit up. This happen about a year ago - at that time I reset the sun roof by holding the tilt button for 30 seconds which resolved the problem. However, this time holding the tilt button reset is not working. When I hold the button to reset I hear clicking from the sun roof motor but the sunroof does not move.

To test the motor, I removed the overhead console - removed the three mounting bolts - did not remove the wire harness - and held the tilt reset. I hear the clicking sound after 30 secs but the drive gear does not move. Would the gear not moving when uninstalled indicate the motor is bad?

I'm wondering if something is wrong with in the tracks. When I use the hex wrench to manually open (or close) the sun roof will move but it is very difficult - there is so much tension it feels like the wrench may twist and break.

I bought another motor from an 07 on ebay which did not fix the problem.

Tried that... made no difference.

I would look into guide on pulling out the entire sun roof at this point. Its not something you want to play with in the car. Look at it on kitchen table and see really whats going on with it.
