U.S. to Get BMW On Demand (Hourly Rental) Service Next Month

BMW On Demand, the hourly (or daily/weekly) rental program currently available in Europe (see model selection and pricing), is crossing the Atlantic to the U.S.

The service will begin in New York City (Manhattan) where folks will be able to rent cars from participating dealerships, but you can expect the program to roll out to other major and maybe not-so-major U.S. cities.

BMW of Manhattan will be the first (and pilot) dealership and will have approximately 100 328i sedans available. More models will become available later. In Europe, the range of vehicles available covers the whole BMW models gamut, from hatchbacks to convertibles, sedans, SAVs and M cars. See below for a look at some of the BMW On Demand models recently spotted in the garage of the Welt.

The U.S. BMW On Demand website is already live at http://www.bmwondemandusa.com, but the program won't kick off, nor pricing announced, until next month.

According to Ed Robinson, president of BMW Financial Services, "BMW On Demand USA goes beyond any existing premium-rental or car-sharing programs in this market," said Robinson. Indeed, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, nor Audi have any similar service that is scaled like this. "This is a great opportunity for anyone who is considering buying a BMW or someone who wants a luxury car, premium service and ultimate driving experience for that special occasion, weekend getaway, business trip to experience being part of the BMW family."

i'm totally down for this program. Going out of town, rent an X5 or a 550, and it will satisfy my needs.

I like the idea as long as M cars are also available on these services and prices are not high.

If prices are reasonable and guidelines aren't too restricting (some rules are to be expected), I think this would be a good program to get people into BMW's to really drive and experience them.

I think it is a bad idea
1. It sort of dilutes the brand as anyone can rent (I can understand if they only offered to current/past BMW owners; for example you have a Z4/M3 coupe, etc and need a bigger car to pick up someone at the airport, etc).
2. Most zipcar drivers don't know how to drive and they are a road hazard. Thankfully, they have large logos on the car which means you can avoid driving around them. Assuming the same kind of impatient New Yorkers will rent 328 from BMW directly instead of 328's at zipcar and they will drive like idiots.

Yea this is def going to work in the current U.S market in my opinion and boost BMWNA sales. Im real curious to see what kind of guidelines there are going to be for something like this. Especially on the M cars lol. I guarantee there are going to be tracking devices in every single car that they are going to rent out will most def have a device, kind of like a tracking device but probably a little different. Mostly measuring speed, where they are located (like exactly) probably even how they are driving the car meaning revs, or if they turn traction all the way off to do a little drifting around, if they used launch control ect... But if your renting an M car, you need to be able to actually push the car to its limits as well as your own limits to get that thrill that its suppose to give you. We shall see great idea though!!

I bought an M to be exclusive. Not to see 100 other M's remotely on the road everyday...

I'm loving this idea. I'm down as long as they have M cars. Now I can rent each car for a week and then decide what I llike to buy.

Most people over here only rent a BMW for an hour at the Welt. Then its really cheap at around 40 euros with gas. The program is meant to "sample" a new BMW.

IF you really want to rent one... go to SIXT or EUROPCAR, they have better long term rates for AG and M models.
