It's the internet and I have no idea if it's true. But if it's true.. wtf, progressive?

Progressive was great... until I got rear-ended, while sitting at a light.
Uninsured motorist with a brake failure. $1,300 in damages had to be paid out of pocket, because its was not really his fault but the mechanical failure. Apparently uninsured motorist coverage does not cover those. 2 months later my renewal comes up and they quote me $1,900/6 months. 4 times the amount i paid previously. Dropped them on the spot.

It's stuff like this that makes me yell at people who brag about getting the cheapest insurance possible. You pay for insurance to cover you during some of the worst times in your life. Is it really a good idea to look for the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel cheapest folks you can find?!?!?

I had them when I was young. When I crashed my car trying to avoid a drunk driver (who also crashed and got caught), they investigated me for 3.5months before finally OK'ing repairs that needed to be done to my car. I will never use them again. EVER.

I've only used esurance and geico since I've been on my own. I've never filed a claim with either one, but esurance did jack my rate up for no reason I'm aware of.. So Geico it is for now and hoping they're not jackasses like progressive. (I wish I was eligible for USAA!!).

Well..they're not denying the story. To paraphrase "We fucked over our policyholder within the confines of the law."
http://www.twitlonger.com/show/iquabj "This is a tragic case, and our sympathies go out to Mr. Fisher and his family for the pain they’ve had to endure. We fully investigated this claim and relevant background, and feel we properly handled the claim within our contractual obligations. Again, this is a tragic situation, and we’re sorry for everything Mr. Fisher and his family have gone through. "

I had a great Insurance Law professor once. He was an adjunct professor that still practiced extensively. He absolutely loved taking insurers like Progressive to task on matters like this. Learned a lot from him.
I feel terrible for the family involved in this case. Very sad.

i pay out the ass for AAA, but when my mom got in an accident and they took better care of her than we expected without hassle, it was a no brainer.

There's not enough information to really get an idea. Of course the other driver's carrier settled for their limits to the deceased's estate. That does not mean you are entitled to the entire Underinsured Motorist Liability limits though. Sounds more like it was a valuation dispute that went into litigation.

Glad I saw this, I was thinking of switching to Progressive.
My dad is a VP at an insurance company. Pretty much the company will determine if the payout of the claim is going to be more or less the value of all legal fee's associated with fighting it. If they believe the fee's will be less, you can pretty much bet they will not pay out and force legal action. Unfortunately that is how it works now. |

Folks the remember the old saying, "you get what you pay for" so if you go cheap on insurance the end result to will be cheap solution.
Really, insure is something you pay for to cover the really bad things that should be outside of your control and the last thing you want to do is go cheap on it, and I not say you have to pay high rates, but when your shopping at the bottom it not going to fair well for you. As the article said , the last thing you want to deal with when something bad happens is fighting with your insurance company. I have State Farm and been with them for over 20 yrs and for the few instance where I had to tap the insurance it was handled very well with little or not arguments on either side. That is what you really want, and the reason I like the All State commercial these days, do you really want to deal with the Mayhem Guy, that is what you are setting yourself up for when you go for the cheap. |

The problem is too many insurance companies are publicly traded company so they have to meet Wall Street numbers. In the end Stock holder will decide if you recover what is coming to you. |

This is viral at the moment and I hope the momentum continues and with lost policyholders. Insurance companies should be held accountable for their actions even if it's legal.

Even the privately held companies act the same as publicly traded so they are no better. A company like Progressive isn't going to worry about one person, even if it damages them a little. That is why they have so many ad campaigns.
I got into a car accident in WV when I was in college. The shop had my car for 3 1/2 months because my insurance company didn't want to pay out the full amount to the body shop. Why you ask? Because they had to use a third party claims adjuster to figure the cost of the damage. Then they started knitpicking literally over pennies for awhile. Mind you this was a company located in NJ. They wouldn't total my car, but they eventually paid out the full price to fix it (70% of the worth of the car). |

Progressive was the worst company I ever dealt with. A lady backed out of her stall in a parking lot while I was preparing to park. I was going to back in so couldn't get out of the way, even though I saw her coming and honked. Banged teh rear quarter panel.
She admitted, and her mother that was with her said "Just get the insurance, that's what you pay it of" In the end, Pro tied 50% to me, even though I wasn't moving, because she apparently changed her story, but they would never let me hear that. They low-balled me on the repair and then sent me a check for about $225. The only thing I could think to do to get back at them was not cash the check and screw their books. Recently they sent me a notice that if I had lost the check or something, I either needed to claim it or they would report it to the State as unclaimed monies. I told them I needed another copy of the check. Still waiting. . . |
