BMW cannot issue maintenance history?
I asked my salesman for a printed version of the maintenance history, he's telling me that they are not allowed to disclose this information? What gives? Is he lying?

I've heard this many times on this forum and it baffles me. When I went to buy my car my CA printed it without me asking and explained to me everything that has been done to the car. Since then I've asked different dealers for the maintenance history because I would lose it or something they never even hesitated to print it for me. I mean it's going to be YOUR car. Why wouldn't you want to know what was wrong with it.
......Unless they are afraid that once you see all the repairs and failures you'll decide not to buy it. There is a section with the previous owners information and address though. They just blank it out. "If you don't know where you came from, you don't know where you're going" That car may be a money pit. |

They can print it out. I've had it done on my car when I sold it, they emailed the PDF file of every single service it had. Services I didnt even know about (since I was the second owner)
They can, its just a matter of if they want to or not. |

I've gotten mine, but he had to do a little bit of tweaking because it showed the previous owner's name and address in the system on a straight up print out, and he didn't want to give that to me (which was fine).

He's not lying. When I was shopping for an extended warranty, the finance mgr. said I cannot give you this information (once it was decided I wasn't buying it through him). I was a bit taken aback, and then he said, "But if I were to leave this printout here on the table, and you took it by mistake, I wouldn't worry too much. And he left his office, while I took the extended warranty and maintenance printouts.
It does state on it that it's not for customer use. |

I had Audi send me all history to a car that I wanted to purchase at auction....so it wasnt even mine. And I also requested all history for both my BMWs, they just removed all previous owner info

I was told because of "privacy laws" that you can't get maintenance records for preowned cars because the former owner had the work done under his or her name. I think that is BS because Lexus publishes all service done at any Lexus dealer on their owner's website under each car's VIN. BMW could definitely come up with something similar.

Heres what the salesman said... :Yea, sorry about that, BMW's rule. In big bold letters on top of the history it says "Not to be shared with third-parties and non-BMW Affiliates."

I had problems getting mine. The SA was able to read it off to me from his screen, and show me the screen, but would not print it out. I challenged him a bit but he wasn't able to give me a reasonable answer so I gave up and walked out. I got the information I needed, so I didn't pursue it any further by going to another dealer, or calling BMW, but it still struck me as odd. If it's a privacy concern based on not wanting me to have the previous owner's information, I already had that since there was a warranty receipt with all the previous owner's information printed on it in the glovebox.
One of my arguments was something along the lines of, "I bought the car. The car is my property, so are you telling me that the service history is not my property?" And he said, "No, the service history does not belong to you and we won't give it to you. It's none of your business." That's about when I told him to shove it and left.

So if the service history says on it at the top "Confidential" and "This document is not to be shared with third parties" why would someone insist on a person violating that and giving it to them? And if they do, how would you be able to trust them to be honest with you regarding the other matters of your transaction?

The dealer is correct - BMW's policy will not allow a dealership to provide the vehicles maintenance report, even if you now own the vehicle. See attached - it specifically states that this can't be shared. (I was lucky and have a friend that works at BMW).
That being said, some dealerships might not adhere to this and may provide the document to you. However, in most cases they will not. Crap policy? Perhaps - but I do see where they are coming from as it does contain personal information.
