New guy looking for my first BMW
Hey guys. Ive decided to get rid of my pickup truck and get back into the sports car "scene". My Tacoma is the only truck ive ever owned and I am sick of it. trucks are not fun. Ive always like BMWs and I want to get into one. My favorite generation has always been the early 2000s ( i think maybe they span 1998 through 2003 usually). However I really like the 07+ 3 series coupes. So ive been looking for one of those.
Do you guys have any advice? WHat to look out for? I know German cars have a reputation for having some very obscure and very costly electrical problems. German cars in general are pretty expensive to fix. This I know. However, finding a BMW in my price range WITH a warranty is tough. What are common issues with current 3 series? I've already done a little research on the fuel pump and injector problems. But theyre recalls right? So warranty or not I would be fine there? Thanks guys! |

The major issue with the early E9x 335's involved a bum high pressure fuel pump. They were fixed under recall, warranty is extended a very long time for these issues, and it's probably impossible to buy one that hasn't had the fix at this point. Other than that, there's not much to worry about.
I have traded in my car every September for the past 11 years in a row. This is the first year I am not even considering trading. I love my BMW! |

I had an E46 and loved it. Now I'm in an E90 and still love it as well! You are right in the expensive repairs. Sometimes its difficult to find the part (at a non-BMW shop) and if you work on your own cars, you may need some additional specialty tools. As far as the electrical issues - I haven't seen any from BMW. VW, Audi - yes, but not from any BMW I've owned. I don't have a warranty on my 07 335. But I didn't feel it was necessary as it only had 22K on it when I got it. |

As with every pre-owned vehicle, I believe warranty is necessary. Even more so that it is a BMW. Don't cheap out 2-3k for 3 year warranty because repairs are going to cost you WAY above that price for even a minor issue.
I always like to say that a piece of mind when driving is priceless, knowing that you will not be paying charges out of your own pocket when problems arise. You may think that warranty is useless, but once you really do experience issues with your car, you will regret not getting it.
