No claims with Gieco - need my windsheild replaced, pay out of pocket or make a claim
Hey all.
I have 3 cars insured with Gieco- full comprehensive and liability, 2 '07 Bmw's and 1 '03 A4... I'm paying $130/mo. My windshield on my E93 needs replacement. Should I file a claim or pay out of pocket at about $500 total? Non OEM glass from Safelite is around $400 installed, but I think comes with a lifetime warranty. Thoughts? |

I don't think that will increase your insurance too much. My $5,000 accident caused my insurance to job $20/month. But glass? Probably not much.
Also, I know some states require insurance companies to replace windshields without a deductible? I believe that was the case when I lived in MN. Something to look into. P.S. Go Gophers! |

I asked my agent (wawanesa), they can replace my windshield without my premium taking a hit. Just pay my deductible (300), ive heard the oem glass can cost between 900-1200 (due to rain sensor). So its up to you, my glass been repaired from cracks 2 times and i just recently got 3 more cracks.

I called the dealer. The cost on my windshield is around $515. I've looked online and quotes are between $390 - $550 depending on which windshield I get installed. |

I have Geico as well. I had a windshield replaced on a vehicle a few years back and it cost me $0 out of pocket. I think I am allowed 1 windshield per yer per vehicle. I don't know if this a FL thing only or what. Have you spoken to a Geico rep?

I have not called Gieco... I'm trying to stay off their radar as much as possible... I may do so today though. I know I set my deductible to about $1k to save on premium.

Yes, it's a FL thing. By Florida law, all front winshields can be replaced by your insurance company for free without paying a deductible and it will not raise your premium. Not sure about the rear winshield. Had the front winshield done 3 months ago on my Tacoma paid by Progressive.

The problem is even in Florida its free with your insurance. perhaps your current insurance wont raise you bill becuase they know internally what the claim was, but in the future if you change insurance, they will see a general claim, and BAMO higher rates.

Had a claim in '08 w/ Progressive for windshield. Paid nothing and premium stayed the same. Switched to Geico shortly thereafter (mid '09) w/ a lower rate. My premium was lower w/ Geico than Prog. Not necessarily true that you get higher rates when you switch. Aside from the windshields, my wife and I have good driving records. Don't ask how she goes through so many windshields. I have no clue.

Generally speaking, comprehensive claims will not affect an individuals rates, but all comprehensive claims for an area are used to set everyones rates. So assuming your insurance covers it, and it costs more than your deductible, then why not? I've had dozens of windshields replaced over the years thanks to the gravel Maine likes to spread on the road in the winter, never a problem, just pay the deductible, and often the glass places will discount it such that it doesn't cost anything out of pocket.
Of course, as with everything related to insurance, this may well vary by state.

i have glass coverage though was replaced for free, did not affect premium. if you do not have glass coverage it will still NOT affect your premium. there isnt much a way to break your glass while being at fault (unless you just have fun with a hammer). FYI you can always ask your insurance company questions about your coverage. You can even get an estimate through them and choose to go pay out of pocket and it wont affect your premium. |

A glass claim shouldn't result in a premium increase. I replaced the windshield on my TL twice and never saw a premium impact (State Farm, in my case).

So I ended up calling Gieco to see if it was covered etc... Turns out Wisconsin has no such law that would entitle me to a free front windshield. The lady who I spoke with in customer service insisted on bringing on a "glass department representative'. I agreed only to find out I was speaking with a claims person who tried their darnest to have me file a claim. Really quite sneaky. The rep did mention that when they file a claim they also look at driving record etc, which may raise rates. About 2 years ago I had a pretty big speeding ticket that has not effected my rates. I DID NOT want them to go digging. Especially with 3 cars insured. Needless to say I was not happy with the service, and the attempt to mislead me into filing a claim that would have resulted in the same end result : My deductible ($1000) is far more than it would cost me to replace the glass out of pocket ~$500.

I have geico and replaced the windshield last year. Geico would have covered the whole cost if i didnt choose oem glass, but since i did it cost me $250. Your premium wont increase either.

Generally, I agree wit the folks saying if your deductible is lower than the cost of the replacement, claim it. That said, Geico is somewhat more aggressive than other companies when it comes to dropping folks whose claim history exceeds what their actuaries say should be your claim history. They dropped me for just that, and not one of my claims was attributable to me; they were all comp and uninsured motorist. I was in my late 20s at the time and I had a nice car and when shit happened, I wanted it fixed. Geico thought I should drive around with that shit rather than claim it.
It was stuff like: - Small dents from tree limbs that fell in a storm - Windshield that couldn't be repaired - Various scrapes and small dents caused by careless folks in parking lots - Loss by theft of expensive items I could document (aftermarket radio, Dupont lighter, Mont Blanc fountain pen, fur-lined leather coat and an LV piece of luggage) Personally, I think it was the last one that ticked them off the most. It was $7000 worth of just stuff. It cost them more to replace that stuff than all the others combined. At that point, I'd been with Geico for just three years and hadn't paid anything even close to $7000 in premiums. So, if you don't have any other claims, sure claim and get your new glass.

If your deductible is higher than the cost to replace it yourself then you should just replace it yourself. My windshield needed to be replaced a while back and i called Allstate only to find out that they would only cut me a check for $1.50. Why? Its because according to them it only costs about $501.50 to replace the windshield with non-oem glass. Since my deductible is $500 they only owe me $1.50...I called this other shop and he was very helpful and hooked me up with OEM glass for about $620. I had to reuse the old sensor and such but still, I didnt want to go with aftermarket on a BMW. It would be nice to have something like that replaced at no cost but oh well...

What's the most interesting is my friend in MA who has a $0 deductible by law. Now why would he want Safelite? I don't want to tell the same story over and over, but the bottom line is if you tell the b**** to stfu, you will get OEM for your deductible. |

I would also like to replace my windshield. It has a lot of nicks, chips and a small crack on top right in which it was fixed and stopped from going to a bigger crack about 5 yrs ago with another insurance (progresive). Now I have Geico and would like to know if I am entitle to a new windshield for free? I m in CA. my deductible is 500.
Anyone here Geico customers who replaced windshield in California? Thanks |
