Cross Country Driving Tips.
Going from LA to NY in mid November.
Noting that, what are some cross-country driving tips that you guys have? Get additional insurance? Any mechanical check? Additional Parts? Wrap the vehicle? Thanks a lot!

Lots of energy drinks, check ALL fluids, bra if you want...just depends on how much you care about rock chips I guess. Tires nbd, if your traveling in the summer/fall you dont really have to worry about snow or anything just stop every so often and let everything cool back to normal for a bit but dont turn the car off as soon as you stop! Let it run for a bit. I stopped every 250 for a shot of energy, piss, smoke, and food...kept them short and kept the car running.

I just took a 600 mile trip. I brought, extra quart of oil, 2 coil packs, electric impact gun, rail of sockets, torque wrench, misc screw drivers and all other tools needed to change coils. And oh of course roll of duct tape! lol.

Besides the oil and duct tape, you shouldn't be driving if you need ALL that for 600 miles. If you have to go 2k miles, do you have a spare differential in your trunk too?

lol common, I was towing my sea doo up to the remote thousand islands. I had a coil pack go before on a short 50 mile trip I didn't want to deal with a misfire. It all fit under the trunk liner so it was worth the piece of mind.

I didn't see anyone say this. This would be one of my top 5
I always carry a Tire fix a flat repair kit, but be sure to have an air compressor that can be plugged into your lighter socket. Be sure to carry the necessary tools to change a tire. Especially if you are not running RFT. Run flats obviously, you can get by and drive to a dealer or tire shop.

I've done the cross country thing in a Z3, E46 328i, Z4, and 128i. Given the direction of gas prices, just carry credit cards as well as the air compressor & don't worry about your car - it won't even be breathing hard.

Just carry some basic stuff.
If possible get some visual inspection done by BMW dealer. One tip - even if there is no city for 100miles, their ll still be a cop looking for speeders.....I saw many from SFO to NYC drive. I wd also suggest to start a thread n keep posting ur status with pictures... We ll enjoy as well. Cheers...... |
