I was playing with my car today, and for the first time I noticed that the windcreen washer jets are under the hood instead of ontop.
I don't know how many cars have them under the hood - but on my old car they were ontop ;-) That's soo odd. I don't know how I could have not noticed them in the 6ish months I've had the car... Has anyone else noticed? |

My A4 had them under the bonnet. Problem was that because of this they were unable to get them to squirt the windscreen properly, and just as I feared when I first got the car, 4 years later there were scratches on the upper section of the windscreen where the water didn't go in sufficient quantities to stop the wiper blades from scouring the glass with the dirt.
I had the dealership adjust them many times, but they could never get them right, so I put it down to a design issue - form over function. Haven't tried the E90's yet, I am sure they work well.

The Acura TL has the washer jets under the hood also. The American Accord also has them under the hood. When it snows, it would freeze and it wouldn't work.
The washer jets in the E90 are heated. The Infiniti G35 has them built into the windshield wiper arm.

Right, agreed with JamieA etc. One more pet peeve of this location - in snowy ares of the world, you really have to take care and remove the snow from them carefully - without scratching hood or the under hood flat colored spot; otherwise it will not clean the windshield at all, which is not much fun in the cold slushy season!!!

So that means the Euro Accord has them there also. No need to worry about it when it snows. They're heated on the E90.

Heated or not, if there is a lot of snow in there, a thin film of ice can form. Before the water can break through it, it will spray backwards into the engine bay and not on the windscreen. So best to clean it properly. The heat prevents the nozzles from freezing up during use.

Most cars will now start having them under the hood area and the wiper arms need to be under there etc. This is all due to the new pedestrain safety requirements. Currently EU only I believe but heading to the US soon. So if you hit someone there is nothing that can cause excessive damage. Strange but that is the reasoning. The E90 does horrible at these new standards tests, b/c BMW did not make the hood higher above the engine so that there would be some give if a pedestrain was hit, they went with look aerodynamics over the pedestrian safety. This is the cause for the newer Audi cars having such a higher looking nose (not the grill) they raised it up so there is an area of give between the hood and engine. I personally think if you hit a person with a car they are getting hurt and that is that.
it also reduses wind noise etc... it is the future! |
