I think catching them in the act is probably the most appropriate time to teach them a life lesson about what is and isn't acceptable. Granted, they weren't being devious, just typical kids without a developed sensativity to property value, so you can't come down real hard. But I certainly would have needed to be on Xanax or something to pull an "Oh, lol, let me help!" like in the commercial. It was a funny commercial though. "Subaru: Eh screw it, it'll be your kids problem eventually!" |

I saw this on TV a couple nights ago -- my initial reaction was "oh my god; no!!!! What are they doing?!?!?!"
When the Dad came out I starting thinking "ok, now that kid is going to learn a serious life lesson" but the guy just joined in. While I love my car, if this happened to me I can say that I'd probably do the same as the guy in the commercial. Then I'd spend the entire night trying to undo all the water/toothpaste damage You can't get mad at a kid for something like this; 'Dad' should have shown the kids that you only do the outside of the car.

I agree that it devalues Subaru a little bit, but I too agree that getting mad once the damage is done does nothing.
I wouldn't join in for sure, but I wouldn't blow up about it either. Yelling won't make the car any dryer. |

And that's the difference between parenting now and the way I was raised. My father, like so many men back then, had served in WW2 and came home to raise families with a military-like discipline mindset. Respect for your seniors and property was paramount and any deviations were dealt with varying degrees of severity. I would have been given the strap for that offence which in those times would have been considered a fairly lenient punishment. I would say that parenting is more difficult today because it takes more energy to come up with creative disciplining tactics that don't involve corporal punishment. I'm not saying that the strap or hand was the correct way but it was over fast and you learned from it pretty damn quick. I didn't raise my children like my dad raised me and I found that I really had to work hard at it. I just think back then it was a more efficient way for a broader spectrum of parents to deal with situations.
