Compliments from Benz Owners?
Anyone been stopped by a Benz driver yet?
I got flagged down yesterday by a guy in an SL500. Asking how I enjoyed the car, and how quick it was. He told me he was contemplating getting rid of the 500 and getting the 335. I of course told him to go test drive one right away. I thanked him for his compliments and went on my way. Always cool to run into nice people out there on these asshole filled roads. |

TWICE!!!!
Once this morning....this lady with her poodle driving a CLK63 AMG cab...was unsure where she wanted to go....veering left and right.....I fly pass her, she catches up with me at the next light, pulls up beside me rolls down her window and starts ogling over my ride ..... it was a little surreal considering her ride was more powerful and twice as expensive.. Second time I was passing by a benz dealer and decided to pull in to see the new C class. EVERY CA there was staring at me and my car wondering what i was doing there (I had temp light plates on). The CA showed me the new C and then came over to look at my car..... He could not stop praising it.

Yep me too. Just yesterday a benz owner was standing beside my car in a parking lot looking in (but not touching, so no harm done). They said they want the 335x -- I offered a test drive but they declined.
So later, I tried the same thing on a P-car (standing next to it in a parking lot looking in) -- but all I got was a dirty look & nobody offered me a test drive... |

At a traffic light last week a guy in a S550 pulled up next to me and told me he loved the styling of the car and was contemplating buying one. Pretty awesome that someone driving a car twice as expensive was so impressed and into my baby.

me too, a McLaren SLR 722 pulled beside me and said my car was the bestest on the planet. He was heading straight to the nearest BMW dealership to dump his USD $550,000 supercar. True story.

haha. The sarcasm from some is great.
But truthfully how many of these people really will dump their Benz. Probably not many especially the ones driving the good Benz.

Not all Benz owners are nice.
This guy with a clean ass CLS500 was coming up from behind me so I slowed down cuz I wanted to give him some props. He misunderstood and thought I wanted to race him. He says, "You can't be serious man, you don't want to race your $40k car." Asshole, oh well I would have gave him a run for his money for sure if we did race. |

I'm still lurking here once in a while, even though I bought a Mercedes-Benz SLK last year instead of a 3-series coupe, as I had planned. I realized I really wanted a convertible and just couldn't wait for the 3-series one to show up (and the Z4 doesn't do it for me ). Whenever I see a 335 coupe on the road I think to myself "gee, I could really see myself driving this car". I don't regret my choice, though. The SLK and the 3-series are both great, but obviously completely different cars. For now, my preference is on open-air motoring, but who knows, perhaps there's still a 335 in my future. At least I'm pretty certain this will be my last Benz, as they keep discontinuing manual transmissions from their model lines.

In the US, they just discontinued manual transmission on the SLK350 for 2008, and the SLK55 AMG never existed with a manual. The only R171 left with a manual is the SLK280. The C350 "Sport" doesn't come with a manual anymore either. It almost seems like MB is about to give up on competing with BMW for the wallets of the driving enthusiasts.

Hmm... I wonder why Benz has no manual for the AMG. Having monsters HP car with manual doubles the fun

Their strategy is very telling. In the US, manual transmissions are only available for the bottom of the line in each class (if at all), as if to say, look, here's your opportunity to save a few more bucks, since you obviously couldn't afford more than the base model. It's almost like it hasn't crossed their minds that there are drivers who wouldn't even want the car without a manual, especially if it's a performance sports model.

Benz can't make manual transmissions as well as BMW...they're all clunkers with a long change and imprecise action. However, they make great self shifters
