Shaking gear stick
Just got my new manual E90 today, a 4 pot 318i. I had an Volvo S60 with their space ball gearstick.... it was rock solid.... but my e90 gearstick shakes... on startup very visibly... is this normal?

Mmmm, maybe I was just pampered with the stick in the S60 (believe me it was the only pampering I got in that thing)
here is what it looked like. |

Totally normal for the e9x manual. Of all the other manuals i've owned and driven, this shifter definitely shakes more then most, but you'll get used to it.

This is funny... i was gonna make a tread like this one today... my E92's shifter is a belly dancer! Which is crazy cuz I just traded in my 05 Acura TL and it was MT too it never shook at all. Not even my sisters old supra or civic's MT shifter shook as much as this one. However, My sisters current A4's shifter shakes a little but not NEARLY as much as my 335's shifter...
Not exactly sure whats going on here... oh well

I noticed the shaking as soon as I picked up the car. My CA looked as if it was pretty normal.
My GSX shifter did not move at all and neither does my Evo's shifter. IIRC, my dad's Firebird shifter shakes a bit, though. So, yeah, this is definitely taking some getting used to for me.

Mine doesn't really shake, but it does vibrate slightly. I can feel it if my hand is on the shifter while stopped and in neutral. Otherwise, it doesn't vibrate while in motion.

I've got used to it now.... also it seems to have calmed down a bit... maybe that's just my perception. It's more noticeable at low revs.... having driven a powerful diesel for 5 years i noticed today that I'm just not giving enough gas.

Okay, a little car design lesson. The manual gear lever is connected directly to the transmission, the transmission is bolted to the engine, the engine sits on hydraulic engine mounts to minimize engine shaking getting to the chassis. In-line 4-cylinder engines are naturally unbalanced, and shake a lot. So the transmission moves in unison with the engine. Since the only part of the drive train you see inside the car, is the gearshift lever, it shakes like the engine does.
