Strange Noise while turning
Hi Guys,
I have noticed a strange noise the last few days. It happens while I am parking (or at very slow speeds). Occurs at the moment I change direction (i.e: turning the wheel right and quickly move it left - either way). I here a snapping noise and feel a slight nudge in the steering wheel. Has anyone experienced this before? Is this serious? |

Do a search on this - I believe others have had this problem and some have had the steering column replaced because of it.

My dad had this problem in his 645ci actually. His car made a loud ticking noise when he turned. We took a look underneath the car, and a friend noticed that the inner side of the back left tire had been stripped a little, and it had been catching on the underside of the car.
Check out your tires to see if you might have stripped them. |

It is not a ticking noise. It is a snapping noise. It only occurs once at a time (when i change direction of the wheel - in mid turn - and at slow speeds)

me too
Same steering 'clunk' at moment of moving from one full lock, to goto full on opposite. It is not a continuous clunk clunk clunk, but a one-off as though steering has some slack taken up at moment of changing direction. I tend to notice while reverse parking, and even though I never steer stationary the noise disappears when going faster.
Asked wife to listen, noise is louder outside car than inside.

I have this too... along with very loose feeling and jittery feeling steering that seems to get worse with more miles and I've been researching both problems. A few e90 people on here have had it and it seems to be the steering column. I've found quite a few Z4 owners that have complained about this too. The "sticky" steering seems to be related to heat.... it's been pretty hot here the past 2 weeks and I've had the sticky steering almost every day. I have an oil change coming up in about 2k miles, so I'm gonna get it checked out then.
Is anyone aware of a TSB or anything out about this? |

Now that you mention it, i have that problem to.. I never made a comment about it because i thought it wasn't a big deal since it doesn't effect my driving. BUT when i'm in slow parking like speed, and say my steering wheel is all the way to the right, then i turn left, i hear a "clunk" and it's only one time. Like something rubbed on something. Weird. Doesn't effect the driving of the car though. I guess i'll tell the tech about it when i bring my car in for oil change.
