Test drove both 328 & 335 auto, were disappointed
I went to test drive both the E90 328 & 335 on the weekend. The dealer dun have manual to test drive so I can only test drove both in Auto. First drove the 328 and was very disappointted with the power. It feels way less power than my 7yr old E46 328i(my E46 is manual with confoti Shark injector & confoti intake) and also my 6sp manual 4 banger TSX is also feel way more powerful than it. It even had hard time to pass a PT cruiser on the road!
Then I test drove the 335i auto. It is way more powerful, however, I feel a big hestitation on low rpm, is it just because of the auto? or is it turbo lag? I thought BMW did advertise the 335 turbo has no turbo lag. That turbo lag remains me the bad memory on my old S70 T5! So any 335 owner that coming from NA feel the turbo lag? Damn... I remember when I test drove the E90 330(manual) last year, I was quite satisfy with the power! I hope it is just because of AT... otherwise I dunno what to get! hate turbo lag! 328 not enough power for me (at least not feeling any upgrade) and dun want to get used car (so 330 is not a option at all)! |

There is some lag (Don't know any car that has eliminated it completely), but it's minor at best. Compared to some older turbo cars I've owned this is as close to no lag as you can get.

There is a lag when you're taking off from a stop. That's the only thing I noticed on mine (steptronic).
But yeah, DS mode will give you instant response. D= Bruce DS= Hulk |

I have two things that I'd like to point out, #1 is that the power delivery of modern BMW's is so linear and turbine-like that they may not necessarily feel as fast off the line as another car that kicks you into the seat but eases off as you gain speed. #2 is that the 335 in my opinion has very very little turbo lag, probably not noticeable for the people who have never driven a turbo before and don't know what to look for, it's probably the automatic transmission that you felt was being sluggish.
Edit: +1 on DS mode.

How do you even quantify turbo lag? Every car has some sort of lag even if it doesn't have a turbo. Some have an ass load of power at low rpms, others at high rpms etc.
I wonder if people would still say it was turbo lag if they never knew it had turbos? Anyway I bet if it were a stick you would probably have a different opinion. Find one to test drive with a manual and give it one more chance... |

I've never own a turbo but there is a bit of lag from a stop or a slow roll like 5-15 mph (6sp here). Once you get pass the tiny lag it pulls well and a lot harder after 3-3.5K straight till redline!

please tell me you're a French Canadian; lol. THere is definately a little turbo lag, but not much. Depending on how you drive it is almost nil. The most lag you will feel is when you go from zero throttle to WOT. It's there, but i have come to love the power delivery of this engine; it's a beast. I dynoed my car a couple of days ago and got 302 hp and 280 torque at the wheels.

Try it with the auto in DS mode.
If you still don't like it - then I guess it's just not for you. |

1) new 328 is much faster than your old one...what you feel may be different because of the refinement... I feel that my e90 is faster in cruise than B777, but that is just what I feel...
2) Maybe they gave you the 335i with dead fuel pump? 3) Maybe you should stick with the bullet TSX... |

It's hard for me to really wrap my head around the idea of "turbo lag" when this engine has a full 300 ft. lbs of torque at only 1,400 rpm. |

You guys are so defensive and closed mind! I never said the 335 is slow but I just feel some lag that remind me on the old Volvo turbo in my bad memory. I rarely drive any auto, all my cars are manual so I dunno is the lag from the turbo or from the tranny. I just ask for opinion and then I got flamed like I am a troll! what a board!
