New info. discovered on steptronic tranny

I posted this on another thread, but thought this deserved its own.

If you go back and do a search, you will find that the general consenus is that D starts out in 2nd gear and DS, well there seems to be those who think it starts out in 1st and those who think it starts out in 2nd with just a different throttle map.

Well, I just went out and played with D, DS, & M.

Guess what? D & DS both shifted 5 times (well, DS mode kept me in 5th gear and would not shift into 6th unless positioned back into D mode, nevertheless both modes start in 1st gear) from a stop and I did this several times with several throttle positions. So it would seem that the only difference between D & DS is the throttle maps and shift points, and maybe something else computer related, but definately not gear selection.

Go out and try it yourself (those with Step obviously).

DS & M modes provides about the same acceleration at full throttle, while D mode took a little longer to get going.

The only time the car started out in 2nd, is when I was in M mode and I didn't downshift and came to a complete stop, if you don't downshift into 1st, you will start out in 2nd. Other than that, it's all 1st from a start.

Interesting...when my car comes in I'll give it a shot. I always thought it was that DS started in 1st and D started in 2nd. I'll try it out in the padre's 6er I guess.

Exactly, D will only start on 2nd gear if you have been pampering your E90 for too long!

From my experience, both D and DS starts out in first. In D, the transmission just shifts into second before 2k rpm.

In Manual mode, the car starts in 2nd from standstill unless you shifted into 1st prior to starting.

The only time that I recall the transmission will start in 2nd is when the wheels are slipping. ie. on icy/loose surfaces.

There is a pdf explaining all the mappings and the transmission logic/software somewhere on this board. I've been trying to search for it out of the numerous threads but with no luck.

weird, feels like DS and M mode starts at 2nd gear, unless you downshift to 1st in M mode. When I start driving in 2nd gear in M mode it really does feel the same as DS mode

ECU adapts to picks 1st or 2nd gear, people have claimed various combinations based on style of launches.

This is exactly how my car shifts. You really have to give it a lot of throttle to get it to stay in first gear in "D". I love the way the car shifts in "DS". I wish there was even one more level of sport mode (DS), but I guess that is what the paddles are for.
