Benefits of the M-Shifter
I'm debating on whether or not to get the M-shifter for my E92. What are the benefits of put on the M-shifter, instead of keeping the stock shifter?

To add, I think its pretty nice to use. But, the practical thing would be wait for a real M-shifter or a shorter shifter. Something similar in the Performance Sport accessorries.

I thought the stock shifter was way too tall and fidgety-feeling, so getting a shorter knob was a great improvement. Whether you get the M-Sport (perf leather) version or the "sport" version (looks just like stock, but shorter) is basically an aesthetic decision. I went M-Sport because i'm not a huge fan of the pearl-chrome trim on controls.
I realize that neither is a "short shifter" in the traditional sense, but shortening up the handle was a remarkable improvement in its own right. |

as said before, shorter, heavier. And matches with the perforated
steering wheel and brake handle

makes a huge difference. I have the e46 Perf Package one, and it makes the biggest differnce in how the shifting feels. Everytime I drive a car with the stock knob on it I remember how much worse it really is.

Well worth it. I have the "sport" one without the perforated leather and I really enjoy the way it looks in the cabin and the slightly improved feel. The stock shifter looks downright ungainly when you've become used to the M or sport one.

By itself it's a nice upgrade, not a huge difference IMO. In conjunction with the M-sport steering wheel, it's a really nice upgrade. The combination of the M-sport steering wheel, shifter and a true short shifter kit (like the Rogue Engineering Octane) is a great upgrade. Not sure if a true SSK is available yet for the e92, sorry if I'm taking the thread in an unintended direction.

A shorter knob is more ergonomic and requires less movement when shifting. Theoretically, it does "shorten" your shift...thereby making it slightly faster. By 0.001 of a second maybe...LOL.
I'd say it's more of an ergonomic mod than a performance one. But something you will notice right away and appreciate since you use your knob and steering wheel everyday. I created a list of knobs friendly to the E9x called "Playing with Knobs". If you search, it should come up. It should give you an idea of what else is out there. |

I never thought that just a shift knob would be able to help out the feel of the gearbox so much, but the M shift knob really did improve the throw and feel drastically. Stock, it felt very tall and rubbery. I couldn't tell third from fifth, and coming from an s2000 it just felt like crap to be honest. Now, I no longer even feel the need for a short shifter for this car. It was definitely a mod worth doing.

Yeah...lets make no mistake...the short shift kit (SSK) from BMW will definately be a large improvement compared to just swapping out a short shift knob...just gotta justify the shop time and mod costs. Hehe.

I found the OEM knob to not fall readily to hand. The M knob is the perfect height and it feels better.

Does anyone have this knob:
BMW Performance Shift Kit claims 25% shorter throw? http://www.trademotion.com/partlocat...subcat2=121695 Is it the same as the one talked about here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23481 And if anyone has it, any thoughts? comparisons to the M-shift knob or the on above? TIA |

No, they are different items. One is just the knob, the other a short-shift kit.
The short shift kit would be very nice to have -- there are some others out there, maybe UUC (?), so shop around and see which fits your needs. They take some time to install. Shift knobs are easy/quick to DIY install. IMO the best knob is the M-sport perforated leather one. teto.
