Birds BMW - Quaiffe LSD Group Buy

Hi All,

Just a quick post to bring you all some good news

This morning I received an email from Kevin Bird (of Birds BMW, Bucks) which invites members of this forum to receive an attractive discount when purchasing a Quaiffe Limited Slip Differential (and potentially other parts like ARB's or suspension depending upon what you want.)

This offer is specifically for those of us who have welded diffs (more or less all cars from September 2007 as far as the evidence suggests) although I am sure if you have a bolted diff, you can still contact Kevin for a quote.

Basically, Kevin is going to post a list up of the diffs he has available at any given time. Anyone with a potentially compatible vehicle should PM kevin the details he requests and he will get back to you with a quote.

I've had my quote and I am on the verge of pushing the button.

Kevin says:
Quote:
Only available to UK customers, and installed on Birds premises.

Birds will publish a list of the Exchange Quaife Final Drives available under this offer once each month for the next 3 months.

Any member who wishes to purchase should PM his VIN, mileage and address details to Birds BMW via the forum.

Birds will email an offer.

First forum member to commit by submitting an order and deposit will "own" the relevant drive.

It's important that the installation takes place within 7 days of deposit, because that ties up stock that could otherwise be sold elsewhere.

Most importantly, the offer price. All drives on the list will be offered at £1,800, including installation, lubricants and VAT.
So, there you go.

From my point of view, this is a very attractive price including labour and everything else all in.

I hope you all make the most of it and I am sure Kevin will be along shortly to update the list!

Regards
Matt

How much would this normally be likely to cost?

From the top of my head its normally just under £2200 for my car. Most car variants are over £2000.

Do it.
You need it.

I see my old car is no longer listed if I check the RFL.

Guess its been written off then.

It had a Quaiffe.

I'd really like a quote for a bolted diff, been thinking about it for ages amd a healthy discount may jus sway it

This is a really good deal, I had a Quaiffe LSD installed as the first mod on the car, and to this day its still the best mod I've done to the car.

I'll happily live without the Procede/downpipes/intercooler etc on the car, but the Quaiffe is a must.

Remember people are often happy to spend £1K-£2K on wheels/tyres/audio/iDrive retrofits...all of those things are great, but none of those change the way you can drive the car like the way the LSD does

My initial reaction was that this didn't sound a good deal bearing in mind the price quoted for a Quaife LSD for an E92 335i on Birds website is less than £1800 fitted! However, now I've looked more closely it appears that the prices on their website don't include the dreaded VAT which does makes a bit of a difference.....

Damn, that is a good deal.

Unfortunately I don't have that sort of money to throw at my car right now, gutted.

Just a quick update guys.

Kevin has emailed me the list of available diffs and I had hoped to upload it today. Unfortunately I've just got home and my laptop is in the car.

I'll do so from work tomorrow!

Hi Gents,

Please see below the first list of available LSD's.

Sorry the list is a little messy, but basically look for your car make and model and if it is below, then Kevin has a diff in stock which should be right for you!

33-928-337 135i Manual, E90/92 335i Manual, Alpina B3 Biturbo Manual 7571186/7 1

33-928-341 E90/92 335d 7561280/1 and 757175/6 1

33-878-521 123d Manual, Alpina D3 Biturbo Manual, E90 325d & 330d Auto 7572520/1 1

33-898-594 Z4 sDrive 35i Manual 7571594/5 1

33-828-174 135i Manual From 03/2008 7588173/4 1

33-079-001 F01 740d, F07 550i GT, F10 550ix 7577101/2 1

33-928-281 135i Dual Clutch, 335i Dual clutch 7570280/1 1 this one is likely to be resvered for a couple of weeks for me and possibly another member here - Kevin is dealing with us to arrange now

33-898-597 Z4 sDrive 35i Dual Clutch 7571596/7 1

33-908-235 E60 530d Manual, E90/92 325d & 330d Manual 7571188/9 1

Remember that if there is a drive on here which looks likely to fit your vehicle, you will need to PM Kevin (Birdsbmw) with your car details including year, engine, an IN PARTICULAR, your VIN number. The VIN can be found on easily on your windscreen - it's a series of digits in the bottom right hand corner.

As you can see, my diff is reserved and I am now just finalising the details for when I can get darn sarf!!

Rgds

I had this done on my 335d at Birds.

Highly recommended, transforms the car and gets the most from all the masses of torque

Gents,

Just to let you know I had my LSD fitted yesterday, so the next person to buy a DCT will receive a modified version of my mint, sparkly rear axle (only covered 30,000 miles)!!

I will post a full review at some point soon once I have actually used the thing properly, but for now I can confirm that Kevin and his guys run a tight ship, which operates more professionally than any other garage I have seen. The workmanship will obviously need to stand the test of time, but so far I can say that everything has gone as expected - no weird noises, smells, bangs etc etc so I believe that it is 100% right first time, which can be a rare thing nowadays.

By way of an early review, the car feels great now. The LSD has made an immediate and noticeable impact and works perfectly with either full or 'first stage' traction control, almost as though it should have been there all along

The ARB's I had fitted at the same time have also made cornering a little more reassuring, especially on the motorway, with a healthy feeling of neutrality rather than understeer. The car's inherently poor turn in is now more exposed though, so I will need to correct that next. I am fairly confident that I will have the Birds suspension fitted in the future now, once I can afford it

You'll also need the levelling gear from here (I can't remember exactly what though?):

http://www.bmminiparts.co.uk/ is the first port of call, cheaper than the dealer.

Sorted

The Quaife was one mod I never got around to,I'm immensely envious.

Enjoy.

Yeah I saw the ones for sale in the Classifieds, the problem is that the wishbone mod costs a bleeding fortune!

Still, it does need sorting I think!

I have looked into the TRW Arms which they sell in the USA. TRW are the BMW OEM Manufacturer of these parts. I have the respective part numbers and been trying to get pricing from suppliers none of whom have bothered returning my email..

Anyone up for a group buy if we can find a supplier at a reasonable price?!

Hmmm...

A slight abstract question here, but all E92's have an 'adjustable' top mount at the front which will allow a certain amount of negative camber.

E46 M3 owners often carry out a similar mod, which seems to work on improving turn in. I realise it might be a bit 'unusual' to suggest what is basically a free mod, but I'm seeing few to no drawbacks on this one.

Anyone done it or have thoughts?

Matt,

It's not really 'adjustable'.

The the top mount is fixed by a locating pin as officialy E9x have fixed front camber and castor, but this pin can be knocked out leaving the top mount to slop about in the play within the 3xtop bolts.

So you can then get a bit of adjustment per se, but you are then relying on the small studs and nuts to hold it steady, which they are not really meant to do.

Have you had your geometry setup properly?

Changing the front and rear toe to the m3 settings had the single biggest effect on turn in of any mod for me and it only cost £75!

All non M model are set up for stability, i.e. slow steering and a rear end that just wants to go straight only.

-0.05 deg toe in all round will transform it, my rear camber was already the same as the M3. Front camber fixed to just leave it IMO.

Yeah I know it's a bit of a bodge really, but if it was reliable then I would consider it. Doesn't sound absolutely safe though.

How is the for modified then? Is that something to do when having tracking done? Mine needs a KDS/Hunter alignment at the mo - the front tyres have both worn on the 'left' side, so it looks quite badly out.

I only had it checked 4 months ago so I must have hit something... Doh!

Mat, rear toe will very often throw the front out also.
You are holding a steering angle other than straight-ahead to counteract the rear pointing the wrong way.
It can often be down to worn bushes at the rear as well as mechanical angles

Geo - as above.
I had it aligned to ZSP (sports) suspension numbers as many machines will have that data already.
Its not radical, but is ideal on a slightly lowered road car with firmer bars.

A tiny front toe-out value will help turn in at the expense of needing a little more steering attention on motorways.
