Grinding noise coming from my 2006 X3

Hey guys,

I've had my X3 now for almost 2 years with about 77,000 miles on it. Recently I noticed that there was a slight grinding noise coming from the underside of the car. At first I thought it was the brakes but the sound persists even when the brakes are not applied. The noise is most noticeable when I turn the wheel.

Am I correct in assuming it's the transaxle? Any type of input would help.

Thanks in advance guys!
