Got a parking ticket after I sold my car, what should I do?

So I just received a parking ticket for a car I recently sold. The parking ticket was issued the day after I sold the car. I have the confirmation document from the online notice of transfer from the DMV that has a sell date which was a day before the ticket was issued. What's the best way to go about this?

Go to the DMV and explain this to them, they'll point you in the right direction. Make sure you take the sale confirmation and a copy of the ticket.

I received a ticket from a red light camera more than a year after selling my GTI with the same plate. I called them up and explained that it was 1) no longer my license plate and 2) a Subaru Outback. They resolved it quickly.

lesson learned for you all, when selling a car keep your plates and return to DMV. Parking ticket is no big deal but imagine instead it was a fatal hit and run. Before you knew it, you would have been arrested and it would have been hours before proving your innocence.

Yeah, I'm really lost on this myself? In PA, you get new plates when you buy a car, and take your old ones off.

Yeah in CT you need to turn the plates in if you want to stop paying property tax on the vehicle, although not all states have said tax.

I believe the plates remain with a car for California, whereas in most other states the seller would remove the plates from the vehicle and retain ownership of them.

That's probably true. California is like its own damn country when it comes to car regulations.

well, our acura mdx was totaled in may of last year. my wife turned the plates to dmv and in august we started receiving parking tickets in the mail from the totaled vehicle which must have been fixed and was driving around nyc without plates. i guess they got our address from the vin number because there were no plates on the vehicle. my wife submitted document after document to show that we were not the owners and we finally (last week) got a letter from nyc dept of finance that they were in error and we did not owe them anything. it took a year.

Yeah, here in CA the plates stay with the car.

+1. Seller should complete a notice of transfer of liability online or mail it in when the car is sold. Transfer of liability + bill of sale should be more than enough to get you out of the ticket.
