BMW have started conception on a new 8er family to sit above and sustain the next BMW 7er. The family will consist of a Coupe , Cabrio and Gran Coupe.
Exclusively with V8 and V12 and A more powerful Tri-Turbo diesel. The response is based on the well received reaction of the BMW-Pinifarina Collaboration - The Gran Lusso at the recent Concorso d'eleganza. That car utilised similar design elements to the current outline of the BMW 6er Coupe and the new BMW 4er Coupe , and showcases how a large coupe would fit in with the numerical and product consistency - 2, 4, 6, 8 and Coupe , Cabrio and Gran Coupe. Although the car will not be a complete carry over of the Gran Lusso although it utilises the same ideas , it will offer distinctive style , presence and high end luxury to bridge the BMW brand to the Rolls-Royce brand. An M variant is also a possibility.

I can't imagine them selling very many of these. You don't see many 6 series, let alone a more expensive even larger version. Also, in the price range it would likely be, most buyers would rather not buy a car from a brand that also makes cars that cost 1/10th of the price. Maybe I'm wrong.

scott26 as far as you know, and are allowed to speak on, should we expect something to compete with the R8. I would really like to see BMW ///M make a product that competes with the R8. I understand the i8 is coming but I meant something more along the likes of the M1 or maybe a non hybrid, more performance oriented, version of the i8 (which I would assume wouldn't fall under the I branding)

Each of them will have that model... doesn't mean you really see them outside of the R8. I see about 30 bentleys for each SLS I see. I see probably 50 bentleys for every ZR1 I see. I've seen 0 Porsche 918s |

First BMW kills the M Division's soul (engine noise from speakers, the "M4" name, M SUVs, etc) and now it's ruining the legacy of what's easily one of the greatest designs in its history. What's next, the roundel is turned into a cube?

The new 8er will expand on ideas from the recent collaboration with Pininfarina which is showcased as a Coupe and Cabrio.
BMW see its sportier options as Coupe , Cabrio and Gran Coupe as illustrated for the 2,4 and 6. A Shooting brake is also hypothetically possible. The Coupe could also be based on the new Rolls-Royce Wraith and with a similar output of power allowing the 8er to differ greatly from the next 7er. 8er would also feature CFRP material technology inherited from the next 7er, which will be utilised in the body structure , platform , suspension and body panels.

Now the car has a launch date , 1 year from the launch of the new BMW 7er, in late 2016 , BMW will resurrect the 8er starting with a Coupe and a Cabrio and Gran Coupe in mid-late 2017. The new 8er will be based on the incoming G11 7er lightweight model.
The decision is taken because the new 7er makes the car possible aswell as highly profitable. Although the Gran Lusso is a conceptual look at a an 8er it will not be a complete carry over of the Gran Lusso it will use some its design elements that also showcase the next 7er including the dynamic tapered roof line. Proportions , short overhangs at the rear with longer at the front and its upmarket presence. Final design work is underway. Potential engines include the V8 , V12 and a more powerful incarnation of the Tri-Turbo diesel. The internal brief is for a car that reminisces of the sporting luxury of a BMW Coupe such as the E9 CSL and the 3200CS. But also gives the BMW customer further options before a Rolls-Royce or another luxury coupe.
