Best USED SUV/Car under 10k for Winter

Hello
i am looking to buy used AWD Car/Suv so i can drive it in winter, i am not sure what to look for? What year/milage/Cylinders? etc

may be 2002 - 2006 Honda CRV, Toyota Rav4 or Subaru, Infinity FX35

What you guys think?

We have an FX35 and I quite like it. Perfect mix of utility and sportiness if you get the sport package (20" wheels, sport susp, etc). In base form, it's not that great.

but it drinks lot of gas

and hows the reliability of 2003 - 2006?

crv would be good medium between cost/reliability etc.
fx35 would be more fun and luxurious
rav4 more girly
Sub would be nice too but not sure which model you are looking at. We have outback and we like it a lot.

It does drink a fair amount of gas but it is full time AWD. Reliability is fine. We have a 2007 but it's the same motor straight through and haven't had any issues. Why did you put it on your list if it drinks too much gas!? It's a much nicer car than all of the other listed vehicles, that much I can promise you.

How do i differentiate between non sport and sport FX35?

Yeah, FX35's are nice, don't they come with ventilated seats? Also the exhaust is a bit on the loud side right?

Of that list.

No brainer if you can find a good one in budget. FX35.
Near bullet proof engine, sportish looks and performance.
Cargo room is so so.
Slap a good cargo tube on top when needed fixes that .

Picked up an FX37 couple months ago. Excellent blend of an SUV and sportiness. If you can find a first gen fx35 for under 10k then definitely go for it.

I snooped around and see an FX is possible.
Clean looking one owner with detailed carfax is at Freeman Mazda here in the metroplex .
Doubt it has seen much salt...
Asking 12 but you know they probably are in it around 8.

100k miles on these 3.5 motors is nothing.

Edit: ^ is rear wheel drive.

I would not mind having it though.

My gf had a 2005 or 2006 (can't remember but really no difference) fx35 for 4 years and just sold it to her sister who has had it for another year. Sister recently passed 100k miles with it. The following is what popped up:

- throttle boy needs to be cleaned out, can cause engine to go into limp mode for some reason. This can be done at home, tons of DIY on the infiniti forums for it.

- Rear brake caliper replaced. They flushed brake fluid also for this.

- battery replaced

- oil OIL OIL, the vq engines suck down oil so be sure there is a proper record of oil changes. Ask me how I know lol.

- Brake light (this was a stupid issue) but needed to be fixed.

- spark plugs, usually around 100k miles people do this on the vq engines.

As far as exhaust note goes, it sounds awesome but from the inside you would never know its there so don't worry about it at all.

These cars are pretty top notch in quality and have excellent safety ratings (10/10). Reliability is around 7/10 but I think thats only due to some of the cheaper things japanese cars have on the inside. Nice thing is that this generation wasn't crazy with electronics meaning less stuff likely to break. Engine on the other hand is bullet proof. It does drink a descent amount of gas but luckily you can put regular in it and have no problem. You CANNOT due this with the fx37 though. If you have any more questions let me know.

I had an '04 FX45 that I kept for awhile. Great car and problem free. I can only imagine the 35 would be just as good.

The thing is that currently I have 09 BMW 335i with sport package 18" wheels and I know RWD is bad in winter and I am not sure if I put Winter tires on my 335i would be good enough to drive in snow. That is the only reason I am considering buying second car/suv for winter. I know FX35 are good in performance but I am not looking for performance here. My 335i is good enough to enjoy performance

may be CRV will serve the purpose???

I love my 01 Subaru forester as a winter beater. Easily went through 8 inches of unplowed snow and 2 foot snow drifts. If I decided to change it I would get a newer forester xt with a stick.

Oh yeah, snow, haven't seen that in a while. In that case any subaru would be great fun and built to last. These things are surprisingly reliable but does drink up a bit of gas. Had an 01 WRX back in well, 2001 lol. Im sure you'll have a lot more options with a GD or GG WRX with your budget.

I may get flamed for this but its hard to beat an old Expedition 4x4 for cheap utility. They are easy to work on, cheap, and can go almost anywhere. Mine has been the most reliable car I've ever owned (had it for 10+ years)...

or a Chevy Tahoe, they can be a little thirsty, no worse then the other v8 SUVs, but no vehicle has better parts availability, or ease of maintainence
