Early 2000's Porsche 911 4S vs. E46 M3?? Thoughts?
Hey guys, I just sold my E92 M3 and looking for something not quite a pristine, something I can have a little fun with, maybe take to some track days, do a little tinkering etc....
I'm really leaning towards an 04-06 E46 M3 but have way thinking about a 2002-04 Porsche 911 4S but I know literally nothing about these cars. Any thoughts? |

the 996 C4s, in particular is a great car....just be VERY careful buying one. Don't buy one with low-mileage, because it is far more likely to break from not being used for several years. Your best bet is to buy one with some miles on it. I was considering buying a V2 996 C4S before deciding on getting a 135is....but just make sure you get a Porsche Pre-Purchase inspection before you even think of buying one. If you buy one with a lot of issues (like the RMS/IMS engine bearing issues), you are looking at thousands of dollars in repairs immediately. good luck! |

Thanks Guys! I think my comfort level is a lot better with just sticking with an E46. Just trying to figure out if I would try anything else.... To be honest, there is just not much out there that interests me. I used to be a Vette guy but after owning and driving the european stuff, going fast in a straight line doesn't seem to be as much fun...

Used to be a corvette guy....
Why not a 2004 z06. Cheaper, faster and more reliable than what you have mentioned. Corvettes are a damn good handling car, easy to modify and play aruond with and if you want to strip the interior to make this a track/play car, then you really won't care much since the interior is nothing special. |

The 996 will cost more in maintenance for sure. The 996 engine is also known to self destruct in rare occasions. A low risk of catastrophic and definitive failure is a bit scary, even if low risk. That being said, the 996 is certainly a very potent machine as-is, even today, and excellent base for a track car.

Rear main seal issues, run away. Ugly as sin interior on the 996. Intermediate main shaft issue too, boom, bye bye engine. I guess the same can be said for the loose vanos bolts on the E46 M3
