Will 4 wheel alignment fix outer edge tyre wear?

Hi, both my E91 and a colleagues E92 are wearing their rear tyres on the outer edges. Mine was flagged at a service as being 2.0mm and wanting changes and his at an MOT as an advisory (albeit at a tyre fitter so you'd expect it?).

Both sets look like they've got loads of tread left (I'll measure tomorrow but I'd guess 5-6mm) across the tyre apart from the very edge.

Would a 4 wheel alignment fix this? I have tried searching but got lost in the varying threads on tyre wear and switches to non RFTs......

Both cars are on Bridgestone RFTs. Just doesn't seem right to be thinking about junking tyres with that much tread on 90% of them!

Yes it will. Simple answer.

As long as they dial your camber back, which not all places can or will want to do especially on the front

Thanks, thought that should be the case. I'll check with my local Indy then

Nottingham wheel alignment is quite good, and they use hunter machine. Worth give them a ring

Worth checking what the rules actually are - I think it's fine so long as a certain (high...) % of the tyre has decent legal tread.

On my E90, the outer edges wore really badly on the OEM RTFs but when I switched to non-RFT's they wore normally.

My current E92 hasn't worn the outer edge of the RFTs at all surprisingly.

Was that without changing anything?

I went from RFTs with your problem to non RFT and it went away. I did notice the previous owner hadn't checked the tyre pressures and suspect this is what killed the outer edge as I keep tabs on mine regularly.

Got the geo done recently as a precaution as the alignment will always move from spec so worth getting it done yearly if feasible.

Yes, it's well reported. By changing to non-RFTs the wear will even right out.

The outer edge wear is a *ahem* characteristic of the RFTs, recommended pressures and factory geometry.

Yep, just the tyre change. I have always been pretty religious about checking my pressures so I don't think that was a factor in my case.

Interesting though that the problem is absent on my new E92 on the exact same tyres though, not really thought about it until now.

I was thinking that too. I've owned RWD BMWs for 5 years now and every set has worn the rears on the inner edge. I expected that on my old Z4 as I was running excessive negative camber (-3.0 IIRC), and the e90's going the same way but with more normal neg camber. Both cars on non-RFTs.

Interested to hear how exactly tyres are wearing on their outer edge.

My front RFTs are wearing on the outer edge, and quite oddly too, sort of breaking up.

Common issue, often as simple as tyre pressure. Are you sure you are running high enough pressures? Is your gauge accurate?

Having the same issue here on both the original 16" with RFT, and then MV3s with RFT. The front outer edges are really bad, with the current fronts having around 5-6mm of tread over the rest of the tyre, but getting very close on the outside edge.

Just a bit of a concern because to anyone looking at it, a police officer on a traffic stop, it will look a lot worse than it should be.

Yeah fronts tend to have outer wear....and the rears, inner wear due to negative camber.

I'm running 19" RFT on my car. The fronts are wearing evenly, though the rears are wearing on the inner edges....
