Bluetooth module not working

Hi. I know this is a fairly common topic, but my bluetooth on my 2007 e90 suddenly stopped working (not sure exactly when as I just went to make a call and it wasn't connected).
I have the BMW Professional head unit and not IDrive.
The "Tel" has been replaced with "- -" and you cannot access it.
Also the voice commands button no longer works (don't use it, but may help diagnosis!)

So far I have tried:
Disconnecting fibre optic cable on the box in the boot. Not sure if it's the MULF2 or another one?
I tried to disconnect the white cable but I couldn't get it to budge so gave up.
Instead I tried disconnecting the battery (for about 1.5 hours). (I also then closed the boot - doh! Luckily used jump leads to the terminals under the bonnet to allow me to open it again. Schoolboy error) I figured that disconnecting the battery will do the same as unplugging the unit and more.

No change and blutooth still doesn't work. I use it quite a bit so would be handy to get it working again without shelling loads taking it to the garage.

Does it need recoding? Replacement box (is it the MULF2?)

Any help would be appreciated.

Doubt it would be covered under my warranty (it runs out very soon at the beginning of September so would need to claim soon if I can). http://www.theautogroup.co.uk/PDF/Th...ochure_Web.pdf

Thanks in advance!

Yep, sounds like your MULF has given up! Get it replaced on warranty!

Otherwise buy a used one from eBay £80-£150

It can happen if the fiber option pathway is broken somewhere.
check the fiber optic cables behind the HU, under the glove box, most loops going from mulf / TCU to the fiber optic distributor.

Another way of check is to turn on the HU, and take the most cables out of your TCU/ MULF and see if you find the red light coming there.

Sorry to sound dumb but what do you mean?

I looked at the fibre connection at the MULF end and it shines a red light. Is this sufficient to say that it is not broken?

I don't think my warranty will cover the MULF (well past BMW warranty) and the aftermarket one doesn't mention this - the policy is on the link I originally posted. Doesn't look like it covered right?

£100 or so on eBay is alright. Which kind do I need to get? Are there several kinds? Worst case scenario is I buy one, that doesn't fix problem and I sell again.

A red light at either end of the optic cable will more or less confirm no break.

I had an issue on a new CIC upgrade unit where the Bluetooth connector had fallen into the unit rendering the BT dead. Unlikely this has happened to you unless you have been "tinkering"

Bump!

Thanks Jon. No tinkering - only discovered its presence under the boot carpet a few days ago. Assume the unit has died of its own accord.

Re: The MLUF, Which kind do I need to get? Are there several kinds (mine is UK with voice control, not that it works at all!)? Worst case scenario is I buy one, that doesn't fix problem and I sell again.

Sorry to ask a dumb question but how could I use autologic unless I have specialist diagnostic kit?

You do know that you can open the boot with your key when the battery is off don't you.............?

There is a key hole next to one of the number plate lights.

Unless that key hole is operated electronically in which case i am talking bollocks.

I have checked the model number of my MULF and it is VP6KAF - 14B409 - DD. Can I replace with any old unit? Please help!

Part number 8410 9-123290-01

Thanks

By the way it was warm when I checked this morning which indicates to me there is power to it and not a fuse issue, as it would be cold if no power was going to it right? Thanks
