Borla SType Video

I've had my Borla Stype catback installed for about a week now and it doesn't look like I'll be able to make a proper video for a while so I at least just wanted to post this clip of a warm start with some revs. I also have the Challenge HFC DP and stage2 jb4....

Cons:
The cold startup is WAY too loud and kind of embarrassing when I start the car in the morning. It's also very loud when your going slow and just lightly accelerating. Also the idle is a little too loud and unrefined sounding for my taste.

Pros:
It sounds absolutely amazing at WOT. Also although the exhaust is loud in volume, there actually isn't much drone inside the cabin. When cruising, if stock is 0 drone on 1-10 scale, this setup is probably a 1 or 2 in the drone category... I also love the 3.5" tips and the build and fitment are great.

I took some guys from the office to lunch and they love it of course. But the wife hates it and my little girls hold their ears when I start the car, lol.

My plan is to drive with it for maybe another week and if I can't adjust to the cold start volume, I'll probably sell the catback...

Sounds outstanding....and that's a warm start? Wow. And the "S"is the quieter of the two, correct? Did you have an independent shop do it? If you don't mind me asking....how much was the exhaust....and how much to install?

Finally, any power gain? I'm guessing none that you noticed. Does Borla advertise any power gain?

From the video, doesn't sound too loud. I can imagine its quite a bit louder in person though. Sounds good overall, but definitely feel ya on the concerns.

After hearing the Meisterschaft exhaust on RollinLower42's car, I realized that I probably should stick to the M Performance exhaust personally. I've always liked deeper exhaust notes, but at the same time like the refined sound of the stock style exhausts on our cars.

Yes the S type is the quieter one and supposed to be a lower note. I did the install myself so that was free but you can expect a muffler shop to charge $100 or so. The Stype can be found for about $1100 shipped.

I didn't notice any gain in power. I've mostly been concerned with the sound but I'm sure it's 5-10 hp gain especially with the JB4.

Yea it actually sounds amazing in the video and to be honest is sounds amazing in person. But the sheer Volume of the cold start is crazy loud. Maybe I'll download a db app on my phone and see what it reads.

This exhaust would probably be perfect with the stock DP.

I just called Borla (I believe California headquarters), and he acted like I was from Mars when I asked about the S-type exhaust for a 2013 4door f30 BMW 335i. He said they're no where close to releasing that exhaust and that the latest model cat back exhaust for a 335i 4 door in his computer is a 2010. Am I missing something? Did you get this from Borla?

Haha....that guy was clueless. Thanks! A few more quick questions....

Is your wife and kids ok with the sound once it's warmed up? I'm in the same boat with a wife and two little girls. Second....do the tips seem like they'd scratch easily? A complaint of the MPE is that the tips scratch real bad.

My girls (5 and 6) just close their ears when I start it first thing in the morning. Aside from that, they don't mind it at all. The wife on the other hand does not want to hear the exhaust from inside the car AT ALL and you can definitely hear it when you're going very slow and accelerating lightly in comfort mode. I do agree with her here. I wish it was as quiet as stock when I'm rolling through my neighborhood.

I don't think the tips would scratch at all with any kind of towel. The finish is identical to the stock chrome tips.

No cutting of the stock exhaust, right? I heard the MPE can only be installed by cutting the exhaust. Also....any figment issues whatsoever? I just have a Sport Kine (not M Sport), so I wonder if the fitment would be any different (Borla doesn't seem to differentiate between the various BMW lines).

Is there any danger of a code being thrown due to less back pressure? Also, how does it work now that the electrical connector that controlled the leftside internal exhaust flap is disconnected? I heard it used to throw a code when guys would disconnect that even on stock exhaust....how does it work now?

I've had my connector unconnected for months with no issue. The borla comes with a bracket to install the module on the new exhaust and you can plug the connector into but it's unnecessary. I did not move over the module and the plug is still undone.

No worries of codes due to back pressure. No cutting with this system but yes cutting is required on the mpe system since its just an axle back exhaust. Also no difference bt sport line and msport exhaust.

Still trying to decide on the Borla....awfully tempting. Aside from the loud cold start, the normal day to day idling and driving sounds civilized? Any luck installing a decibel app on your phone? If so, let me know exactly how far behind the pipes you have the phone set when you test it and ill do the same on my stock exhaust. Maybe I could get a comparison that way.

Is this the same exhaust for the x-drive?
http://www.borla.com/products/f30_33...t__140512.html

Looks like Top Gear Solutions has the best price. Am I better off spending more and getting it right from Borla.com?

Day to day driving is totally fine except when your starting to accelerate from stop or accelerating at low speeds. IMO, when you're stopped and start to accelerate very slowly, the car should make very little noise but it sounds like you're nearly flooring it bc the engine revs so high so fast (but keep in mind I have a dp). However when cruising at a constant speed, there's very little noise.

As far as the db app, I tried two apps and they both sucked so I think that idea is out. They seem to max out at 85db and this is definitely louder than that. I also tried other things to get the reading higher and it still maxed at 85.

^ Was going to ask the same. I've been searching around I gota say it sounds real nice and the price isn't bad at all.

So what is the main difference between the S (Sport) and the ATAK? The ATAK is just louder?

No vibration - just overall volume is too loud for my taste. IMO, when you are pulling out of your driveway, accelerating very slow, it shouldn't be loud as balls like this is.

ATAK is louder and supposed to have a higher note.

Well hey I have a meisterschaft gt, so anything would be less volume/ferrotious than this. To be honest I like the grunt down low when accelerating, Its at speed drone that I hate/which I have a moderate amount of. If you dont have any of that, then you have the best of both worlds, and I would definitely keep it!

Yea definitely don't have drone. I guess my issue is that if I'm cruising in my neighborhood and I'm TRYING to be quiet, I can't be quiet. Other than that and the crazy loud cold start, it's amazing...
