Deep down inside thats how i felt when my son went from failing to barely passing his classes. But all I could say is , Thats good but you gotta do better next time. This year he has a 47 in geometry but passing all his other classes. Last week he told me he got his first sack in his JV football game and all I did was criticize him on how he made the tackle.

Sounds like how my father was with ice hockey.

Some excitement can go a long way, but in the end, shouldn't there be more of a push to do better than "getting by" after the fact?

I think I push him too much because He's not a smart kid academically. Ever since junior high even elementary school he's been having trouble focusing. He's stayed back twice when he was in the third or fourth grade but i think the schools wanted to keep him so they can get more money out of me(private school). When he started Junior high they wanted to give him meds to help him focus but I told them to F off. Now he lives with me in NC and he's doing much better besides in math. I've tried helping him a few times but lord jesus I haven't seen this crap in 20 somthing odd years.

Sounds kind of like how I was. I never really could focus, because I was always in the mindset of having fun with friends in school and out of school. Never really got the best grades, mostly skated by, some classes I would BS work and still get decent grades. Aside from football, does he have any mechanical or skilled trade interests (cars, machining, etc)?

After years of neglecting grades, and now being older, I feel it has bit me in the ass in one sense, but school wasn't for me. I was more interested in being hands on, and this may be the same instance for your son. It can be a fulfilling experience for him and give him a "path" that will make school feel less..., schoolish.

At the same point in time, it may have just been his surroundings as you've said he's gotten better in everything since being in NC with you. Has he been involved in any kind of tutoring for math?

sometimes kids need that affirmation from their parents, it means more than some parents realize it to be. plus we all know it feels to be gold that someone's proud of us

no other interests that I know of besides Basketball. When he first moved down here it was 24/7 Boston Celtics . I had to crush his dreams of becoming a pro BB player and focus on his school work. He used to be technical when he was learning how to build explosives from youtube but nothing like working on cars or something he could actually use in the real world He just got his permit this summer but he has shown no interests in cars. Football season is coming to an end so i'll be looking into getting a tutor for his math.

It's truly a shame that we applaud mediocre performance after being accustomed to failure. The kid got a fucking C. Unless you have a documented mental/learning condition, there's no excuse to fail any subject in grade-school aside from being a lazy ass. Even slackers should pull Cs.

The slackers pulling Cs are usually quite intelligent individuals. Believe it or not there are people in this world who do not excel at certain subjects no matter how hard they try.

The kid may not get the proper support at home in learning these subjects either. Maybe his dad is horrible at math *shrugs*.

Point is "something something, don't trivialize other people accomplishments when you don't know their whole background."

Agree on being a lazy ass. I was lazy as hell in school and still managed to pull off decent grades. I got B's in high school and C's or above in college and not a single f@^k was given. I admit, I was focused more on my sport than school work. I did written homework when I had to turn it in obviously, but if the assignment was a "reading" I usually didn't do a damn thing. I crammed for most tests during study periods during the day. Of course this all depended on the level of the test. The only class I found I could never slack off on was Chinese in college. I slacked initially, found I was failing, and turned it around with some focus and memorization.

In most cases, just paying attention in class goes a long way. If you can actually stay awake to listen to a teacher who knows their shit, you will probably be alright. Not gonna get A+ on everything, but you'll get by probably.

For the record, I'm not presuming the kid in the video is a lazy ass... Just saying that being lazy in school doesn't necessarily mean you're going to fail. Perhaps saying I was lazy wasn't accurate. I was extremely dedicated and worked very hard, just not so much on my grades. I focused on my sports activity.

I have a cousin who has dyslexia, and he has struggled with certain subjects his whole life...he is remarkable at some things however..hopefully this kid will experience similar successes in the future...

Nope...that's quite the exaggeration. Are there a few slackers who just waste oxygen in a classroom who are actually intelligent? Of course, but don't act like they all are...there are always exceptions to the norm. The average C-student slacker barely passing in high school will be the one changing the tires on the average A-student's BMW in 10 years.

More BS fed down the throats of everyone thanks to the over-coddling of children and over-protection to try and justify stupidity and not hurt Billy's feelings. You suck at something? Try harder, slacker. No one was born knowing linear algebra.

There is no evidence showing otherwise, so you are free to believe his stupidity is beyond his control. I'll think otherwise. He was smart enough to figure out how to set up a camera and post a video on YouTube. Now if word comes out that this kid has a severe learning disability, I'll eat my words. But guess what...if he did, he would be in classes specially tailored for his needs where he wouldn't fail if he put forth effort.

It's like rewarding a serial criminal for going a certain time period without being incarcerated.

I was a slacker pulling C's. Hated book work. I can do just about anything from a mechanical standpoint, though. Some people are more susceptible to retain information by being hands on, thus not being "book smart".

Ive attained a position I never fathomed, and now I look back at all the kids I went to JH/HS with that had 3.0+ GPA's, that are now years out of college working a low paying cubical job.

However, I find myself to be a rare case in this instance, because majority of C students keep the same mentality for most of their lives, or end up realizing it after its far too late.

as I mentioned above, when I saw this on Yahoo yesterday, there was a written portion that denoted the kid has dyslexia. It can be pretty difficult to overcome...

I agree that, as a society, we have become to accustomed to rewarding mediocrity. But people struggle with many types of ailments -- sometimes without those outside their respective families knowing about those ailments.

This kid was so excited to show his dad that he had done a lot better, and you can see the raw emotion in the dad's face and whatnot. Doesn't seem to be a case of slacker-itis to me...
