Austin Formula 1 Meetup

Hi gang

With so many race fans here, I was thinking it might be nice to get together some time during the F1 weekend. I live in Austin, and can make recommendations for places to go. It's Texas, so I'm thinking there will be a desire to have barbecue at some place with hot babes. I have the perfect place in mind.

Also, if you happen to be driving your BMW here, it might be cool to get together for a show-off meet (visual only...no burnouts or anything).

If you want to drive your car hard, there's a local track, er, well, local for Texas as it's 2 hours away, where I can get you in for an open track day. TWS is a lot of fun, and I know the guys who run it so I think I might be able to get some extra people in on Friday.

So, who's in?

I'll be there for this weekend, but won't have my car with me though. Definitely up for a list of places to go after the races.

BBQ, babes, and BMWs, best had at Bone Daddy's. It's on 183, the opposite side of town from the F1 track, but it's a small town so that's about 20 minutes away. It's about 5 minutes from my house. =-)

Another Austin BBQ favorite is County Line. There are two of them, and I honestly don't know which one is better. I've tried both more than once and have had good and mediocre experiences at both. The one on 2222 is a nicer drive, though. Look at the map and you'll see why.

It's not BBQ, but at least one night, everyone should get together at Oasis to watch (and toast) the sunset. It's out at Lake Travis, about 30 minutes west of town. If Oasis is full, there are other choices at the same location to watch the sunset and imbibe.

With any luck, some of my pro racing friends will be able to join us. Carlos Velez from Indy Car might come along. Some of my fellow Grand-Am drivers may also be there, but I can't promise. We're a flaky bunch of goofballs, so no promises.

We should also take a shot at turning some laps at K1 Speed.

Who's in?

Tonight is a good night for Oasis since the track festivities end fairly early and sunset is at 5:32. It'll take about 30-45 minutes to get there from the track depending on traffic. We should plan on being there no later than 4:45 to get a table at either Oasis or one of the adjacent places. Next door has really good fried okra. Welcome to Texas. =-)

As for getting in contact, call me. Too oh to, for won 5, too nein seven 7. I should have my phone with me all day, but the cell service at CotA is sketchy on weekends like this. Usually it's fine, then you jam 100k people into the space and it really drops off. Last year, it could take up to two hours to get a text message through. I think they'll be better prepared this year, but I don't have any evidence they will. It's pure conjecture.

It would be a good name for one, but no, it's not.

It would also be a good name for a regular one, and after you've been there, you might wonder if they might just make that slight extra step.

The food is good, and the waitresses are certainly bringing the Texas heat.

Am in town too. Got a rental, Toyota Camry, wooohoo!

F1 is so much fun, I think the sounds of the cars are as exciting as the visual.

Have fun

Sounds like a plan. Yesterday I was just out of it. Reading over the thread- I'll be there around 7:30-7:45. Supposedly the fun zone/game zone/party zone... Whatever it's called... Is suppose to be be nice. Wouldn't mind checking it out or doing a little go-cart action.

I'll be there at about 7:30. I'm in a new 135i, carbon black metallic. I'm wearing a Rebel Rock Racing shirt and jeans.

I'll call ahead and get a table for 10.

My number is above. Call if you get lost or for a few people who need a lift.
