dammit. my loaner just got rear ended, slightly.
happened last night around 9:20 on the brooklyn bridge, brooklyn bound. it was almost at the end of the bridge, but some kid has to hit my ass. luckily it was slowing going traffic, around 10mph. i didn't even brake hard or anything, but i guess sh!t happens.
we exchanged all the info and waited for the cops to come, but the cop recommended us to settle it on our own, cuz the damage isn't that high, maybe around $300. and i said ok, we'll settle on our own. now i gotta bring this to the dealership tomorrow and get an estimate. should i tell the dealership that i was rear ended or tell them that i did it on my own? i'm thinking, if i tell them that someone hit my behind and i got his insurance info, the dealership might be an ass and change the entire bumper, and that's gonna cost over $1k. i don't think that kid is willing to pay that kinda money on his own and just might tell me to claim his insurance, something i don't wanna do. any recommendations or suggestions highly appreciated. TIA. btw, this is my very first accident on the road. here's a couple of pics taken shortly after the accident. here's another 2 i took after i cleaned it just before. |

lol I would'nt know what to do. Usually rentals I get already have dents and shit already on them, but looks like your rental is fairly new.

I'm always amazed when people turn to a forum, ask if they should tell the truth or what does everyone think about this story that I made up, and then they don't even quit there, they post pics. It's as if it's 1980 and insurance investigators don't have the internet, Google, or know enough to go to a forum.
People here can ramble off 15 BMW dealerships in the metro area, how does the OP know that the SA at Life Quality or people on his staff aren't members here? They may loan out a lot of 328's, but how many are gonna come in with an accident and the damage matches the pics? What's with society today??? |

I don't see why you would want to risk trouble because someone else hit your loaner. Telling the dealer you damaged it is giving the dealer the option to put a $1k bumper on anyway (owner decides how something is fixed, not the driver), while you have $0 from the kid who hit you.
This is something which should be dealt with between both cars' drivers AND both cars' owners.

why would you even ask - return it tell them what happened and give them the info and let the insurance companies sort it out, that's why you get insurance. Why would you want to take responsibility for someone else's actions - maybe he will be more careful and pay attention next time after he has paid for a bumper - good learning experience!
