Tight Stick Shift, Manual Transmission!
Hi there, I have a 6 speed E90 and I noticed that shifting to 1st and 2nd is really hard. Sometimes, it almost feels like it won't let me. This is my first manual BMW, but is this common? Does anyone have the same experience? Thanks.

You have the press the left most pedal all the way before shifting into 2nd... or else it'll be hard to get in gear, or sometimes it will grind...

Yeah, it seems that you only really need to do this for 2nd. You have to be precise in having the pedal ALL the way to the floor before engaging. Ive tried power shifting and the car just tells me to back off by grinding to all hell.

No, mine is a 2006 and has 15,000 miles on it. I have found that shifting a little earlier helps too, but I'm not sure if this may cause problems to the transmission in the long run.

I've also noticed the tranny getting a little smoother on shifts with about 5K miles on the clock now.
Along with pushing the clutch all the way to the floor, try to concentrate on holding the shifter over too you while shifting to second gear. The shifter is sprung to return it to the center position (in between 3rd and 4th gear in the neutral position) and I sometimes catch myself hitting the top of the gate between 2nd and 4th unless I hold the shifter over toward myself when going between 1st and 2nd.

Did your transmission have an epiphany at 8,565 miles or something?

could be shifting a hair off the mark. might have to get acustomed to the bmws shifting or not pushing the clutch in far enough. could be anything
