BMC Air Filters for F30 body

Anyone try the BMC Air Filter for our cars?

I want a little more whistle and noise out of my PPK Air intake box.

Did you only order the PPK air box, or are you saying you ordered the entire PPK? I wasn't aware you could order only the PPK air box.

Is that BMC filter any different than an AFE or K&N?

I used to swear by the oiled-cotton air filters from K&N and AFE, but I did some research and found that, in some cases, there was no perceptible gain in either power or mileage. These filters were originally developed for cars without fuel injection or turbocharging, and there was nothing downstream of the filter for the oil to affect. In our cars, we have Mass Airflow Sensors that could be negatively affected by any excess oil from when the filter element is cleaned and re-oiled. Also, I had an AFE dual-cone filter on my E92 335i and it seemed to need cleaning and re-oiling every couple of months due to the increased airflow going into the turbos.

If this filter is designed for our turbo engines with their associated electronics downstream, then it could definitely be worth looking into. I still think it won't provide much in the way of gains, but if it's better at filtering dirt and dust out of the intake, that's always a good thing.

You echo my concerns as well - I used to have to clean and reoil every 5k miles in my Evo VIII using an AFE filter. Luckily no issues with the MAF in that situation, so unsure if the F30 is more sensitive/prone? I'll give it a whirl, if not for the board's knowledge.

Probably not from the filter, but rather other tuning changes for that engine. Like the E46 330i ZHP models that had different cams and such and produced 10 more hp than the non-ZHP cars.

I wonder if we could get custom cams ground for us (post 100k warranty, and new engine rebuild...)?

You can get anything your wallet can handle.

My '03 ZHP 6MT had Dinan stage 3 software, enlarged throttle body, AFE CAI, Eisenmann exhaust, and a power pulley (smaller diameter). Made a pretty significant difference, but at most only another 20 HP. Stock was 235 HP, so figure 255, maybe 260. It was all bolt-on stuff. Cams were (and probably still are) available for the NA engines, not sure if there's a need for that what with VANOS and turbocharging. There was a supercharger kit available for those engines as well, but it cost around $6K and there was zero chance of any engine-related warranty claims with that onboard.

e46 M3 CSL

List of differences between std M3 and M3 CSL

http://www.ca-automotive.co.uk/items...ifferences.JPG

The trick carbon fibre intake was part of the story.

I recall a UK top gear program a few years ago when they ragged the ar$e out of M3 CSL round the Isle of Man. Clarkson was creaming his jeans abt the car as a whole and the intake noise was epic.

Search for it on Youtube.
