Do you break in your car or beat the hell out of it?

People always talk about how they keep the RPM's low and break in their new car for a couple thousand miles... since im leasing it does it really matter?

I like driving my car hard and since im not going to own it... does it really make sence to break it in slow?? i wanna have fun right away....

Opinions?

i wanna do this right out of the dealership lot

Doing a simple search in this forum for "Break in" netted me these links on the first page.

I allways try to go easy on the diff and the gear box, but I never care about keeping the engine revs down. You are going to get a different answer from everyone so just do what makes you feel comfortable. If anything does go wrong at least you have a warranty.

Breaking it in and beating the hell out of it is the same thing...

That's how you break it in, you beat the hell out of it...

Just finished break in today actually!

For the most part I kept it under 4500rpm, but I definitely wrung it out from time to time. I wasn't gonna baby the thing the entire time. I took it up to ~100mph from time to time, just for short instances. I never really had redline runs though...for some reason I shift short of the limiter in this car.

Don't baby it, but don't track it right away lol. It's hard to really hurt the engine unless you decide to go 155mph right from the get go on a cold, wet morning.

Ok, there are probably endless posts on this, but any way. You simply want to be aware of "heat build up". First 1K take it real easy. Ocasional run ups to redline aren't going to kill it but I'm talking about in one maybe two gears at the most. Then you better cool it and get the revs back to normal. Have a little patience there are some really tight tolerances in there and those parts some wearing to do. You really don't want to bring your exploded 335 to the dealer with the last computer reading showing nothing but redline for 10 minutes.

And genious. even though you are leasing it, you are committed to the car for at least 24 months. You can have fun now and beat the shit out of it and then watch it spend the next 24 months in the service department often while you drive around in a 328 wagon as a loaner and still paying the lease payment. use your head. This must be your first BMW. Second if you wanted something to beat on get a junk old car. A real BMW enthusiast appreciates his car regardles lease, finance or straight out purchase. either way it"s your car for at least 24 months. Do as you please . But all good things come to those who wait. 200 miles before 1000 miles for me. On my fourth BMW.

Because what will happen if you beat on it?

I like to baby my cars for the first 1k miles... its not like it really matters though since the longest I have kept a car has been 3 years. Whether you beat the crap out of it or drive it easy it doesn't really matter, you'll just shell out more money for gas.

Actually, they should all be thanking you....people troll the boards looking for threads where they can chide people for not using the search function.

You've made a bunch of people's day!

I agree. Is it me or are people getting their panties all in a bunch over a newbie asking questions? yes he should search because all of this is answered already. However, most newbies don't know any better. Do you beat or yell at your kid for NOT knowing any better? NO,...you teach him and then if he continues to do something that may be portrayed as lazy then you remind him. Don't need to be an ass about it!!

Just say,..." here is you answer but next time it is recommended to search as people get a bit tired of answering the same questions over and over..." SIMPLE.

Flame suit on...

Another lease vs. own thread. Once in a while I think it's rather embarassing that these questions only apply to the US.

Break In periods are total bullshit with the exception of 300-500 miles for the brakes and differential. engines aren't built like they were in the 60's where an engine literally had ounces of metal shavings circulating through the engine and transmission. engines are so incredibly precision manufactured in this day and age that break in periods literally serve no purpose other than to ease the mind of consumers who think it is necessary. now we don't ever need another thread about this./end thread
