Service Engine Soon light came on?? 50k miles

This light just came on and I am new to BMW. I have about 50k miles on.
The computer shows everything to be OK.

What does this light mean?

Car seems to drive fine.

Not the oil change but the Engine Service shows about 2700 mls left.

Get the codes read and go from there.

Otherwise, its all speculation, especially with the detailed description that you have provided us.

Pep Boys does free OBD code readings, you can have them check it out and tell you.

As far as I know, Autozone does not do code readings anymore. Maybe O'reilly auto parts does.

My guess is Routine service. I remember going in for 50k service.
They checked to see any problems with car. Ended up switching out wiper blades and refilling wwasher fluid. Oh forgot about full detail service.

I believe that code refers to the upstream O2 sensor(bank 2, sensor 1).

Any idea if that is expensive to fix?

I couldn't tell you but when I had a 328 mine went at around 40k miles. It was under warranty though. The sensors shouldn't be too hard to replace I'm sure there is a DYI somewhere on it. Might just be a bit of a bitch to get to them.

I know you get a warning light but I don't think it's a SES light. In your case you got a real error code pointing to a possibly faulty O2 sensor.

Garage List
I would start by going through the service menu to see if anything comes up, could be a time or mileage based service item. If of course nothing comes up there, then have the codes read...

I had same issue it's only 3 possibilities with these type of codes. Does the car sputter when you accelerate?

1. O2 sensors you have 4 if so replace them all the same time
2. Vanos selenoids in front of the car easy but expensive
3. Coil plugs need to be replaced might as we'll replace all as well

What are you talking about dude?

Your car only has 50k miles you don't need to start replacing a bunch of stuff like that till 100k.

The o2 sensors have a expected life of around 140k miles, one of yours failed early no need to replace all 4.

Just replace the o2 sensor the part is around $50, find a independent BMW shop to do it for you.

And I would check with a dealer first to see if its covered, I know in California it should be covered under the extended emissions warranty we get.

I agree replacing all 4 O2 sensors on a car with 50k miles is over kill; just replace the broken one.
If anything replace the spark plugs and clean the VANOS solenoids.

I would replace all 4 and just toss the bad one and keep the rest as back up, if you can determine which is bad or just replace the first 2 pre or the last 2 post. That's just me...If my coil pack on cylinder 3 goes bad I like replacing all so everything was swapped the same time. A o2 sensor is not 50$, lol unless you like to shop eBay junk.
