Is this lifter noise? It's too loud to be injectors *video*

Car is a 2009 335i and I get normal injector noise but at times I get this awful loud ticking and it comes and goes. I can't get it to replicate everyone I took it to the dealer so they keep telling me it's injectors but what they hear hasn't been what you hear in this video. Opinions?

That is the N52 engine which is infamous for it. I have an N54 which has loud injectors but not sure what this is

That's a sticking lifter. Had the same issue myself recently and, at least so far, have cured it by adding a little over half a can (10 oz or so) of CRC motor treatment to the oil once it was warmed up, letting it idle for 15 minutes, and then changing the oil/filter with Castrol Edge 5W-40. I don't know if the motor treatment did anything since I was a bit nervous because of the turbos and didn't drive the car for 30-60 miles as they suggest. It may have been that the solution was simply switching from Mobil 1 0W-40 to Castrol Edge 5W-40 (which is also LL-01 approved). Regardless, I haven't heard the random lifter noise for a while now.

+1 Lifter(s)

Should be covered under CPO (assuming it's a CPO)

its normal, all N54s do that. its called an evap release valve. when u blip the gas it goes away.

I was trippin when i first heard that sound too, did a bunch of research. it comes after a long drive and let the car idle. I took it to the dealer and replicated it for them and they agreed something was wrong until the next day they called me and told me what it really was. even tho I still dont like how it sounds if u do enough research, you realize that all N54s make that sound

n54s are loud engines, if u want a quiet one buy a hybrid lol

It did increase with the rev but it also goes away once I rev it. It's very random. I'm guessing sticking lifter though because when I rev it it goes away and idle will be normal sound again... Then at any given time while idling it will start clicking loud again. If you listen to the video again you will faintly hear it increase speed with the rev and then go away afterwards.

I took it to BMW
Multiple times and it's never happened while with them so they keep telling me it's normal injector noise but it's absolutely not

The sound wont come on if you just start up the car and idle it

this is what you have to do...

Take the tech or SA with you on a test drive then park it and let it idle for 30 sec and it will tick for sure...dont shut the engine off then turn it back on and expect to hear that ticking sound because that is probably what you did.

if you google, "N54 ticking after drive" you will see a thread from 1addicts about it and everyone has the same sound. I know BMW owners are really anal about things so if it makes you feel better go ahead and do it otherwise just chill out cuz its normal

I really dont like the way it sounds either, everytime i hear it i blip the throttle.

if you really had any major issues im sure it would be obvious and affect performance or throw some codes

Why won't you listen dude? It's NOT normal n54 noise. I know what it sounds like. It's a random loud clicking it comes and goes. It DOES happen when I start the car and just let it idle. It does it any any random time. Nothing triggers it

dude its normal! im 99% sure! lol trust me it sounds just like mine even when i had 15k on the Odometer

Your not smarter than those several BMW dealers that told you its normal

me and my boy both have 335s and both make that noise.
its called the evaporation control valve. if it goes away once u blip the throttle its nothing bad. if it was some kind of mechanic ailment, the sound would get louder as you hit the throttle.

why dont u do some research or even click on the link i gave you

I'm sorry I refuse to believe this is normal. I can hear it from 4 houses away from mine. Sounds like a pos car that's never had an oil change in its life. And BMW says its normal because everyone I brought it in I could not replicate the sound. Next time I will give them this video.

Isn't that video proof enough?

Isn't that video proof enough?
Strange that its on a 335 .
I would record it several times
put the recordings on a CD or usb drive and show them
that .
People like to take pictures of the date on a newspaper
to validate the date plus I bet this happens mostly on the first
start of the day.
