Are we suckers?

I was at the BMW dealership today, returning the wrong spark plugs they handed me after charging... well anyway, that's another story.

I was standing there, waiting for the parts manager to process my refund, and saw this key fob in the display case for $24:

I had just bought this exact same one a couple weeks ago online for $3.94 w/free shipping:

$24.00 ??!??!??!? REALLY!
Aren't they supposed to be making money selling and maintaining BMW Cars? I could expect maybe $8-10. They have to make some money on them to justify selling them. But $24 is a 509% markup. *Cough*. Maybe it was Platinum plated, I don't know.

Are BMW buyers that gullible? Are we so rich that it doesn't matter what the price? I for one, am frugal. I got a bargain on my car from a (non)-BMW dealer. Does BMW think we just have money flowing out our arse, or do they think that we just don't care if we waste our money?

On the way out, I drooled on their M6 for a minute and then left.

BTW, I saved $60 buying my new plugs online, but that's a different thread I'll post soon.

The markup is high enough that the dealer told me to pick any of them out for free, after buying my car from them.

I like it, but no way would I pay $24 for a key chain.

Where did you get yours for $3.94??

But I see they cranked it up to $6.71... wonder what's up with that? They probably saw my post and quick changed it! LOL

My dealership gave me two on the house. But I agree, $24.00 is crazy.

I should have clarified that what I meant was accessories that are sold by dealers on amazon. I bought an OEM performance shifter/boot from BMW of Monrovia on amazon for 130 total. Other dealers around my area like new century/savage/Shelly were selling only the shifter for around or even more then 130. Also I've purchased 3 OEM BMW license plate frames from dealer vendors on amazon for 20 a piece instead of 45$.

Haha I remember when I was buying my car in Orange County (where the supposedly "rich" live, the salesman at BMW thought I was buying my car cash.
And when I had told him I was going to finance the car, he had thee most confused face ever.

But yeah, I think we just don't care and we throw money away without thinking twice on it.
I am guilty myself. I buy a few things here and there at the dealer when I clearly know I can find it online for about 40% less.
I just say, "ehh I don't want to wait 2-5 days for the part.
Even though the part is suiting at my house for that long.

We own "BMWs" ... not Kia's or Hondas... BMWs are "premium cars" which you pay a hevety premium for just the name... not the BMWs might not be built "bettter" but anyone knows we all pay a little more for that Badge and Roundel regardless of how well these cars are made.

They assume, that if you are dropping $80k on a new bimmer, what the hell is $25 for a keychain?

Also, accessories are always marked up like crazy.even at that kia or honda dealer, I still bet their keychains are only "$19.95" .... and this doesnt aply to just cars. I mean look at like a Ralph Lauren T-Shirt... in a store the T-shirt might be $25-30 bucks... you can get them online for like $10.

It is what it is.

He was confused because you just handed him more money basically - he makes money off the financing, so he just made a bit more money!

The good old days of offering to pay cash to sweeting the deal are long gone - you offer to pay cash and they will actually discount the car less as they loose the kickback on the financing which is a lump some for security the lone for the bank and then any markup they do on the rate - a lot of dealers will markup a few percent, so it ends up being as much or more money than they make marking up the car!
