The other week I got my car re-mapped. It was from a Indy Garage which I do a little work for. They re-mapped the car through their Autologic Machine - Assuming this is a generic Map.

Before mapping the car, I've had a CR-TECH Tuning box installed which was on the car when I bought it. The bloke who had it before said he fitted it to improve the MPG which it did.

Before the remap (With the tuning box on) I was getting anywhere between 44-47.8MPG and was easy to keep the MPG needle over 50MPG on long runs, I do a vast amount of motorway driving.

After the remap the tuning box was removed and the car software updated, then the map was applied.

I'm now a little worried, don't get me wrong the car is quicker. It pulls at around 2.3k all the way up to 4.3/5k, before it lost alot of power above 3.5k~4k but most of the power seems to be at the top. Is this right? I was hoping that it would kick in lower down the range.

The on board MPG is now reading around 39mpg/40mpg. I now strugle to get the MPG needle over 50 and when it is, it's just on the nose of 50 on long motorway runs. I can't keep my eyes off it!

I know the onboard computer is not 100% but it gives me some gauge, or is this reading incorrect now after the remap?

Also, all those who have their 320D remapped, where is your power band?

A tuning box basically intercepts a signal and puts more fuel I'm, it basically ups fuel pressure etc, in a diesel this equals more power/torque without going into jargon it isn't only fuel that creates more power but other factors however the majority of power increases come from altering the fueling. A tuning box in its simplest terms is the simplest way to yield power, however because it connects onto the fuel rail the existing maps/parameters present in the ecu don't know about it and are running off old look up parameters and your Mpg is now a false over exacerbated reading hence you think you are getting great Mpg... Your not.

Your remap is working as intended altering timing, fueling, boost etc and thus you are now getting an accurate Mpg reading, you could have a heavier right foot too.

The torque and timing if it can be tweaked generates more Mpg but it reality it's only 4/5 Mpg more possibly more don't listen to these bs websites.

Obviously if you put your foot down it will be worse but day to day better due to more torque.

I actually tune specialist petrol cars on standalone ecus but know a little about diesel tuning.

A remap is much better than a tuning box Trust plus you won't have torque spikes which reduce longevity of your clutch etc.

Sometimes tuners move the peak torque slightly up the rev range to prevent the above.

Did you ever actually work out the MPG? I find tuning boxes just make the OBD read wrong, where as the map is fine.

Some remaps even fiddle with your mpg read-out so you get a hardon and think it does an extra 10mpg believe it or not

That's typically de-calibration of the injectors.

Right - Time to update the post after trying to live/love the remap...

I've been driving my car around now for the past couple of weeks with this remap trying to see if its me and making sure that the MPG gauge is not telling me lies.

The car feels like hard work now, its not like it was to drive. Most of the time I'm driving the car below 2.5 rpm and just find total lack of power at the bottom end. I'm constantly feeling that I have to plant the throttle just to get any speed out of it. On overtakes which were not a problem previously I have to down shift twice just to get in the power band.

The Power band from what I can feel is 2.5k - 4k. Is this right? Just feels like I'm driving a petrol. Don't get me wrong, it is quicker but its all at the top. Just seems useless to me. My Skoda Fabia vRS which was remapped, the power came in at 2k to 3.5k.

My MPG Gauge has gone from 44mpg-47mpg (Long Motorway runs) to struggling to get over 38.7mpg.
I topped up the tank last week and managed 480 miles before the light came on. Previously I would get getting over 500, most times 520-540 miles.

Some times I'm getting a judder at 1k rpm in 1st which almost throws your head back and forth when pulling away.

Any ideas? The car is going in for a full service, MOT and they are looking into the MAP with the Autologic company. One of the guys there said its sounds like the map is for a automatic?

Doesn't sound right at all. I had a remap on my 320d LCI and the power delivery was the complete opposite, the torque hits you almost immediately then dies towards the redline. Plus I easily got 580+ miles to a tank of fuel.

Sounds like a bad map.
