How cool is this?
As some of you guys may know, one of our side jobs is working with race teams on engine management solutions and calibration. The client we are working with now is none other than Jim Russell Racing, located at Infineon Raceway (Sonoma California). About a year ago, they approached us with the idea of building what can only be described as the most sophisticated, powerful and downright silly "school" car in the world. Prior to this, the school cars were Formula Mazdas and Formula Mitsubishis. Lightweight but somewhat outdated in the chassis and engine department.
Their new idea was to take a brand new, world class Lola FRJ50 chassis and bolt on the coolest 4 cylinder turbo engine available. Coming from Evo tuning, the 4G63 turbo came to mind. Capable of making no less than 250hp (with boost control disabled) and up to 420bhp through just tuning alone, this racecar could set just about any track record, just about anywhere ![]() So we've been doing the EFI calibration for the last few weeks. For a while, this was all 'hush hush' but I was given the go ahead to spill the beans a couple of days ago. And here are some pics: From today's dyno (bodywork removed) (tuning: ![]() Closeup of engine (check out the intercooler and aux cooler): ![]() Back half (custom intake manifold and sidemount radiator): ![]() Pit lane data download and ecu tuning (using the lambo as an glorified power converter for my laptop): ![]() Trackside with engine cover off: ![]() Here of some official specs of the car: Chassis: Lola FJR50 Chassis material: Carbon Fiber Composite Engine: Mitsubishi 4G63 Evo IX Engine mapping: Vishnu Tuning Transmission: Hewland FJR Sequential Tires: Advan Racing slicks Dampers: Ohlins Wheels: ATS Brakes: AP Racing Height: 960mm Width: 1700mm Weight: 535kg 0-60: 2.6 seconds V-Max: 190mph And there is some BMW-relation as well. One of the 2 partners of Russell Racing is Chip Pankow. Who was the head cheese of Formula BMW ![]() Shiv |

It should also be noted that Nicholas (the guy driving in all of these shots) is a coach for Formula BMW. If his student wins this week's race in Spain, he will be testing for the BMW Sauber F1 team.

Nahh. It doesn't have most of the costs associated with car development, though I'm sure it has its own. Its just a chassis and engine. I'm sure the material and labor to build it is way below that.

My father used to open United Colors of Benetton stores all over the U.S. and Canada. When Benetton was in Formula One he had the F1 model car in his office (no engine in it though) It was pretty cool, could barely fit in it though.

WOW!! that thing is incredible. I must say the one thing impressed me the most was the staright engine configuration with a rear mounted transmision and RWD.
How did you guys found a Transmission that would bolt on that way? Absolutely evrything else to the ;eft and right of the engine can be easily bolt but the rear transmission got my attention. ![]() |
