Prom

So, my senior prom is in a month, and I'm seriously considering not going. It's just so expensive and overrated tbh. Literally the cheapest dresses I can find are $200-$300, and after tickets, shoes, and all of the other expenses, it would cost around $500-$600. That's an insane amount of money to spend in one night. Some girls have dresses that cost $1000! I'm too cheap to even think about that!
Anyway, most of my friends are going, so I need something awesome to do that night that isn't too expensive but also fun. I was planning on renting a Ferrari or a Lotus or something, but then I found out how much that costs
If nothing else works, I guess my friend and I are going to watch a movie and eat dinner somewhere, but I'm hoping to find an exciting alternative. Any suggestions?

Who says you have to spend that much? I've been to formal events before and women can look drop-dead gorgeous in dresses that are less than $100.

If all your friends are going, don't you think you'll miss out? You only can do your senior prom once.

Do you have any guy who asked you out? If so, tell him your concern and he might be able to cover some cost. I didn't have any money in high school and my date thought about not going because of the exact same reason you mentioned, so I think (too long ago) I paid for her hair or something.

Event itself wasn't so great but I guess it was more like a memory that you can talk about it while it lasts.

but you have a $32k car in high school...I'm sure you can swing a few hundred.

Honestly, not sure where land of the unicorns is, but if you are in LA there is a garment district where you can get dresses for less than $100 and look like $1,000.

Plus your date should be able to help with some expenses.

Hey guys, just to clear some stuff up, the main reason I'm not going is because I'm taking an AP exam that day, which will run until 4:30. This means I won't be able to leave school at 12:00 when all of the other seniors get to leave because my stupid school decided that we should have prom in the middle of AP week. I won't have any time to get dressed up or pre-prom with my friends, and let's be honest - girls don't go to prom for any other reason than to get dressed up. If I'm missing out on that experience, it's really not worth it in my book. And besides, I'm not really into partying and stuff. I'd much rather do my own thing I just want to find something that I can do on a Friday night that's a hundred times more awesome than going to a crappy hall, listening to crappy music, and dealing with batshit crazy teenage girl drama all night.

it really depends on you and your personality, me personally I wouldn't miss something like prom but I also know a lot of the nerds at my school (not saying you're a nerd..) didn't go to prom and they really don't care at all, if it's not something you think you would look back and wonder if you'll regret not missing then who cares

Big problems in here!

You may/probably have fun if you go but you won't miss anything if you don't.

Our crew went to the Prom for about 30 minutes and bounced and did our own thing because it was lame. We've been stuck with all of those people for years and the last thing we wanted was to hang out with them at night.

I'm not the one who lives in the land of unicorns. It would seem you should be able to procure the substance locally.

I say go with your friends. Meet up at the prom. You have plenty of time to get ready, even at 4:30 pm. I don't even know what "pre-prom" is. It's just like any high school dance, except everyone is dressed up. If it's boring, you can bounce with your friends, and even that is part of your prom experience. But it is a once in a lifetime thing, so there's no reason to miss it; whatever you are planning to do as an alternative can be done any other day.

You're going to regret not going to your senior prom, as stupid as it sounds you'll remember it for the rest of your life.

If you don't feel like going, you shouldn't go - listen to your instincts. Everyone has their own experience, of course, but even reading this board it looks like it's 50/50 on whether people think it was worth it. Mine was lame, and lots of kids made bad choices (e.g. drunk, wrecked cars, etc.).
