Movado Watch

Can you watch connoisseurs chime in on the value of this watch? Retail and used market prices please?

Is that $400 the retail or used price? Thanks for your input

Some stores will mark it up to $1k, but it can be had for $700-$750 new.

Movado is overrated though, in my opinion.

I'd say that's a $300 or so watch... Or at least it looks like it would cost that much.

As an owner of a Movado watch, I like them since they are simple and and light weight. I use it as my dress watch when I wear a suit, it make a statement without making it look like you spent a fortune on a watch.

I do not have the one which can run up to $2000 which they can, I believe I paid $650/$700 for mine back in the 90's. When I bought mine they could not explain why one was $700 and the one next to it was $1200, other than to say it was more gold on it or it was made of different metals.

Unless someone knows that specific watch, Movado's are hard to value without knowing the specific model since I have seen the same version of the watch prices between as I said $600 to $1200 new. I have not really seen Movado watches hold their value since it appears there is a select group of people who like Movado and you are not buying it because of the fine movements or because it is a great example of Horology.

Any pics of the back of the case? Movado models are hard to identify and range from retail of several hundred to 2K. There are fervent owners and others who just go hmmm. Personally if a quartz based one why a cheap Citizen for $115 and call it quits. Never really understood the appeal myself but the wifey loves hers.

My wifey likes the unique design. Paid $500 fro hers, they wanted $200 to change the battery and seal.

Posted this on the other thread. The Ops watch resembles mine. The face may look black but I decided to go with the blue finish. Mine is from their Luno collection. They were asking $795.00. Since mine was considered last years model I got it for $695.00. I love the clean sleek look these watches have.

Movado

I would say that this one is one of the cheaper ones because it doesnt have crown guards on it, my movado when i bought it, was over 1200. all the more expensive ones had guards on them, the 700 and below did not...

Thanks for the great feedback guys. I'm a sneaker collector and a guy on my shoe group wanted to trade his watch (this movado) for a pair of my kicks.

I know the value of my shoes and wasn't too sure if it would be an equal trade. My shoes have a market value of $250 so it sounds like I'd get the better end of this trade.

I hope to one day make it to the submariner and daytona club!

OP, to answer your question re: price, it'd help to know the model name for that watch. Movado has a huge collection of offerings and I can't say I keep up with what they all are. I can see the watch is a variant on their Museum watch, but that's all I know. The basic styling of the Museum watch is a classic and renowned the world over.

I'm going to respectfully answer you and say, "not much." How can a Movado be overrated when nobody who is serious about watches rates them highly to begin with?

People buy Movados for one reason: looks. There's nothing wrong with that as a reason. Movado are recognized and liked for the sleek, modern looks and at, they do a good job and don't charge too high a price.

I bought an Eliro some 15 years or so ago, and today they are selling for about $700, which is about a $300 drop in price over 15 years. That's not bad really. There are other watches one can buy for $700, but to get the quality of build and the styling Movado offers, one can't really do much better.

Perhaps Citizen has something that suits you style wise in their Eco-Drive line. You'd have to look on your own; Citizen make more watches than I'm willing to dig through. I have no reservation at all about any Citizen watch.

One thing to keep in mind is that Movados are often quartz watches and quartz is where one will generally find watches having one or no hour markers. To get that look, Movado is one of the better choices one can make. Indeed, Movado's look is mostly just theirs. Rado comes close, but that's a jump up in price along with, in several instances, a move to mechanical.

As for the watch pictured by the OP, I think there are certainly better alternatives, but I don't know of any that will be quite as sleek and similarly priced. The overall svelteness of the watch can be matched by an Omega Constellation, but it'll have numerals and markers on the face along with a seconds hand and a date. It will also most certainly be pricier. Seiko LaSalles (vintage) will offer the sleekness and will be a match for simple elegant design. Other major makers' -- JLC, Rolex, Patek, Girard-Perregaux, Omega, and so on -- vintage quartz designs would also be excellent choices.

If I were going to recommend an alternative, I would say look to Citizen or Seiko. Just off the top of my head, this Citizen would be one:

All the best.

Well if you've only $250 worth of skin in the game I'd say good trade, you could post that up for sale on a watch forum and get easily that for it if you wanted the cash. Might even be able to easily get $350 if you hold out for the right buyer. As I and others have noted Movado owners are darn right fervent about their watches, if you like them there is no subsitute to steal a phrase.

Tony I really appreciate your detailed feedback!

I believe he stated the model was a 4864. I picked up my shoes for $120 a few years ago, so I can't be at a loss on this deal. I'm going to do the trade.

My only concern now is authenticity. He claims to have all the stuff that came with the watch however.

That citizen looks really nice, I hope I don't end up getting into a new hobby

unfortunately movados are not highly rated at all. They have absolutely no resale whatsoever. Back in my college days, 5-6 years ago, I bought a Tungsten Fiero. The sticker on the watch was like 2400 or something? I paid around 1600. I enjoyed the durability aspect of it since it was tungsten. I have since moved on to better watches and the fiero was worth like 400 dollars for a trade lol
