Direct mail results - small business experience

I opened my auto repair shop in January and have been looking for wise places to spend on marketing. Everything points to direct mail for results. I have read the many statics of 1-3% return and the need for consistency. My question goes out to those who have experience with this medium. I understand the variables just looking for others advice and experience.

I am involved on a auto shop owners forum but it has a very small(but insightful) base but its nice to collect ideas from a fresh group.

The best method is to try a few different ways and track your return. You must ask everyone that comes in how they heard about you. Word of mouth is the best form but will take time. To start try sending out coupons for discounted services and see who brings back the flyer. There's too many variables to know what will work right off the bat. The post office offers a discounted rate if you mail to every household. Post cards are even cheaper but for my company were less effective. Use color and good quality paper.

A well designed website with testimonials from local customers is also needed.

Best of luck on your new venture.

The post office has every door direst mail but that has been ruined by size requirements. I can get it done cheaper to have a service do it for me now unfortunately.
