Thumbs down Dealer lieing about amount paid..

So I have been searching for a bit on a used 335i. I sent some inquiries to my local dealership. They have one, but won't even go below invoice price for it. They say they paid $42,660, and can sell it to me for $43,505. Now this is way more than it's worth and I just laugh at them, but it's annoying that they would lie to me after I bought a new car from them already.

Invoice is $42,160, MSRP, $45,850. How is it possible that they would pay $42,660 for a used car with 13k miles on it, when they could buy one for invoice cheaper? This just seems like a blatant lie. Am I wrong? I feel like writing them back and chewing them out, but meh

Here's what they sent me..

Hi Brad,

There must be some difference in equipment? We paid more than $42,660 for the car.
(btw, it wasn't a difference in equipment, we came up with the exact same MSRP)

They are a dealership, they exist for the sole benefit of making a profit. What did you expect? A charity event? They are going to give you a 335i for lower than invoice? Granted it has a good bit of miles on it, the 335i is a relatively rare vehicle, when ordered new has many months backed up for a delivery date. Now im not taking the dealership's side, but hey if you don't like the price tag, there is always the option of going to another dealer or private seller. I don't know if this is new to you but "DEALERSHIPS LIE!, That's why they are nicknamed STEALERSHIPS."

I went to my local Infiniti Dealer to look at the new G37 and he quoted me at 45K, I laughed in his face, went into my E90 and drove off.

dealerships lie for sure, but I don't think the 335i is all that rare, at least not up here.

Yes obviously I know they lie. I guess what I'm really asking is do they pay that much at an auction for them? I prefer to verify before accusing :P

Rare in the fact that if you order one new, you will not get it in the normal transit time. Trust me it's not rare to see one in my area of the North Shore, Nassau County of Long Island either.

They're in business to make money so dont expect them to sell the car for below invoice (new or used).

does it matter if they are lying about how much they paid? more important is their final price is higher than what you think a 335i w/13k is worth, so there will be no deal. chewing them out might make u feel a bit better, but is quite pointless...

Is it a coupe or sedan?? If it is a coupe they are still getting premium money for them and won't sell a used one for much less than a new one since they can get retail or more for the coupes still.

If it is a sedan, you can buy a new one cheaper than the used one, so find another dealer.

Generally it isn't worth buying a 1 year old car with 13k on it from the dealer - you looking at a 45k car and they are only going to sell it for a couple grand less than a grand new one, so you are getting 5% off on a car that has already deptrecidated 15or 20% if you turned around and tried to sell it.

Here is my vote since I did Euro Delivery yesterday - buy new, do Euro Delivery to save $3000 and pickup your car in Munich - it is so worth it with the new Welt facility and factory tour. You can do the trip for about $1000 total out of pocket, pickup on a Saturday and drop off in Munich at the drop off center and fly home - save $2k off new, so same price they want for a used car and you get a free trip to Germany!

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understood the actual invoice cost varied from dealer to dealer.

I was told larger dealers can actually negotiate a better invoice cost than smaller dealers, so the "invoice" numbers we are aware of more of an average than an exact quote...?

They might be lying but heres where they could be right.

They dont make as much on vehicles as many would think, especially now that the internet has given people oppurtunity to actually find out how much the dealerships buy the new vehicles for.

To make a vehicle a Certified Pre-Owned, a dealership has to pay BMW for the warranty. That amounts to over $1400 in payment just to make it a CPO.

On top of that, if it has new tires, or if anything was damaged, or "upgraded" the dealership HAS to by contract bring the vehicle back to original specifications, having to pay for that out of pocket. and if it has new tires, that too comes out of the dearlerships pocket.

so, in turn, they could possibly be losing money on that one car.
