Best Dealer for Wastegate Rattle Warranty Claim

Hey all,

I have an '08 335xi e90 pre-LCI (stock motor), and I have noticed the wastegates rattling more and more - especially on no or low acceleration. I am aiming to have my turbos replaced under the existing warranty and was wondering if anyone had any advice?

Specifically, what to call out when I bring it to the dealer. Which dealer to bring it to. Anything I can do to avoid waiting and just get the turbos replaced.

I typically service my car at BMW Sterling in northern VA, but have heard they are not keen on replacing turbos for this warranty. Are there other dealers in the DC area that are easier to work with?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

BMW of fairfax did mine with 0 problems. Basically did it without asking, just mentioned the rattle..talk to Mike. BMW of sterling is very annoying about it, they dont even call back if you start asking about the turbo replacement.

Had mine done less than 30 days ago.

Did you have to put anything back to stock before you took it in?

BMW of Towson. I have not had my turbos replaced, but my rattle was fixed. I went through Mike, and he did it by the books -- no special favors, outside of the norm. The typical process is as follows:

-Tighten WG actuator rods (you can actually do this yourself with an ignition wrench set. 2mm size, I believe, was needed).
-If problem persists, replace WG actuator rods with the new/updated part. The new part is 4mm longer than the early-build n54 part. This extra length keeps the rod from vibrating loose as easily (if at all), and leading to a flapping wastegate / dat rattle. This fixed mine, and has been fine for a year and a half now.
-If problem persists, turbo replacement.

That said, the only way the last is done is if you've hurdled the first two attempted fixes and you fail their turbo inspection, which often means you are losing boost pressure as a direct result of the wastegate.

That's not to say it isn't possible to stroll in and simply request new turbos for the problem, as that's definitely happened plenty. Just keep in mind that those folks likely had a healthy rapport with their SA and techs. I wouldn't say it's a safe bet to simply expect a turbo replacement for just an annoying noise. A very annoying, brand-cheapening noise, but unless you are losing boost, it is just an annoyance.

Need to take my car in to get the wastegates looked at too. So Mike is the go to guy or is there someone else? Oh, did you guys part out as well? I just have Jb4 and DCI.

If all you have is a jb4 and DCI i would just go back to stock, just to be safe. I took out my jb4 and ended taking out my dps too.

Appreciate it, thanks. My 8 year wastegate warranty is coming up in March. Luckily this is happening right before.

Are you guys serious? Expecting BMW to pay after those mods??

Best of luck, but if you aren't stock, don't expect anything.

And, if you're FBO, this is the perfect opportunity to justify a set of upgraded turbos. RB/Vargas/Latest greatest, etc.

BMW silverspring was pretty anal, I'm surprised they have so many positive reviews on google. Seems like a scam.
