Educate me on carpet cleaning

Have some stains on my carpet from beer spills that I was to occupied to clean up, now after months of walking on it they have turned black.

My apartment complex said if it just needs to be cleaned it'll be $35 to $45 dollars. If it needs to be replaced $700 ish. I'm pretty positive it won't need to be replaced but I'm looking for some tips to at least make the stains look better if not go away. If it looks much better, it will fall under "wear and tear" and maybe not have to pay at all.

In short, I'm just trying to make it look more presentable to cover my ass and avoid $700 charge for some carpet they pay $100 for.

I've tried the usual stain removers from Wal-mart but wondering if anyone has better luck with other methods.

i would hire your own steam cleaning place to come in and clean the carpets. apartments are fucking scammy. they say 'clean for $35, replace for $700', translated: we're about to charge you $700 to clean your carpet.

This is why I'm worried, trying to avoid getting bent over before they get a chance to do it.

I used these all the time. Works great and self explanatory. You can rent them at any supermarket or hardware store.

My brother works for a hardware store, I'm thinking about renting one but I want to make sure they do a good job. Any stories to reassure me?

i got that trick pulled on me once. ever since, i've made sure everything was spotless and move-in ready when i left. $50 to clean the carpets and pay a maid $100 to epic clean saves a fuck pile of cash in the end. one of the biggest unwritten rules of being in apartment management is to eat up as much of the security deposit as possible. i dated a girl that was a manager for an apt complex and she told me all kinds of shiesty shit about that business.

I've used them for years and recommend them to others. It cleaned my dog's diarrhea and vomit multiple times and other built in stains.

LOL i even had this one place in college that sent me a bill for like $900 off a $350 deposit, but told me they would settle if i just agreed to give up my security deposit. i was like WTF is this shit?!?! but i also made one critical mistake by not doing the move-in packet.

I've used it on week old dog diarrhea (came back from vacation) and it worked but after 3 tries.

Looks like I will be renting one of those, I just don't trust these apartment complexes. They didn't require a deposit, but they inspect once I move out and no telling what they will do.

Any other chemicals that work well(I've read vinegar or some other types of things that help) that I can soak them in to make it even easier?

Just buy the rug doctor solution and use really hot water. Works like a charm!

why not just buy the $100 dollar carper and replace it

otherwise, the only thing i know to use is a woman or 303 vinyl and fabric cleaner, which is a GREAT stain remover. took stains from 1997 out of my jeep.

Look online to see where you can buy or order "Winning Colours" stain remover. I have used it many times and I'm always shocked by how well it works. Huge red wine stain off of a beige couch and giant dog diarrhea stain out of a carpet.

I had a house on a couple acres right out of highschool, and I threw massive parties almost nightly. These things saved my ass as far as the carpet went.

Just go slow with it.

If the apartment complex didn't take a security deposit then how are they going to get any money out of you?

+1 on renting and something like a rug doc. We have one of those bissell pet specific ones. Holy shit, the stains it gets out is RIDICULOUS. One was set for 5 years and all the rental ones never got the stain out. Non pet related

Personally I'd invest in a rug doc, or again one of those nice portable cleaners. I wish I had bought one of these 10 years ago, best investment ever. I should have taken a picture but I honestly didn't think it would work.

If you have a shop vac it'll work just as well as renting the machine. All you need is the cleaning solution.

If the stain went in hot, clean it with hot. If it went in cold, clean it with cold.

Saturate it with cleaning solution. Agitate it with your fingers. Let sit for 10 min, saturate and agitate again. Shop-vac immediately after that. May have to repeat a few times. Once the stain is gone, repeat twice with clean water to rinse it. That's the best way to clean carpet without industrial equipment.

I've been in the flooring business since 1989 and while we don't clean carpet. The people i recommend our customers to for cleaning taught me that method some time ago. Plus it's worked for me several times with old cat/dog puke stains that sat for a week or more in an area of the house less frequented by people.
