JB4 without OBDII CANbus connected?
I dove into the JB4 install process tonight, and made it all the way to what I think is the last step - hooking up the OBDII CANbus connection.
The car is a manual so the grommet going through the firewall is occupied by the clutch line. I worked at the grommet and searched the car and the web for other options for a few hours, but none of them seem viable. My modding is going to be limited to the JB4 and possibly a BMS Intake. If I run the JB4 without connecting the OBDII CANbus, will it just run in Map 1? Is that how I'd run it with my limited mods anyway? Trying to figure out if it's acceptable to just skip the OBDII connection. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer. |

I wouldn't recommend installing the JB4 without the CANBus ODBII interface connected or at least hardwiring your JB4 to the ODBII harness inside your car under the dash. Here is why:
1. The Posi-tap connection method in the engine bay has been discontinued and Burger Motorsports does not support it any longer. 2. I see no sense in buying a a JB4 and running map 1 although you could technically without connecting the ODBII CANBus interface 3. Future development of the JB4 will not carry over to your JB4 unit because of the lack of ODBII connection. 4. I wouldn't even mod the car further if you want to stay in map 1. Just leave it stock.

No canbus on jb4 means map 0 and map 1 only ie switchable jb+. Did you install the extra EWG harness ? If so you have wasted money and effort as EWG control is disabled in map 1. If no EWG harness and happy with map 1 without the ability to log then ok to leave as is BP

Thanks for the info BimmerFan.
The BMS site says "up to 60hp to the wheels (80hp crank) on a completely stock car," and this thread says that the "JB4 map 1 is stronger than stage 1 by 15hp or so." It seems like these are decent gains from Map 1. Or is that not what one would get by running Map 1 and not hooking up the ODBII? Just trying to figure out this point that you made: |

Okay that helps me understand. I didn't know it was possible to run Map 2 on a fully stock car until now. |

Few things on this thread:
1. Even if you aren't connected to OBD, you can still change your maps if you have your JB4 USB Cable and the computer software. You can change maps through that. 2. You can run the cable through the firewall on a manual car. I have a total of 3 cables going through my firewall on the drivers side right now. If you on into the drivers footwell and remove the bottom most panel where the OBD port is, look up to the left where the bundle of wires is going through the black grommet in the firewall. This is where you'd expect your "unused" grommet to be, as explained in the JB4 install guide. Just to the right of the wire bundle are two small nipple type indentations. These both are "templates" for getting wires through your firewall. The E90 had something similar. Take a drill and slowly bore through it, being careful not to go too deep as to bore a hole in the clutch hose or any of the nearby wires. |

Go here and do a lot of reading http://www.n54tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18588. You really don't want to run Map 2 on a completely stock car though. You might want to consider upgrading your charge pipe and down pipe first because boost is turned up significantly over stock. As mentioned earlier, you'll need to get the EWG wire as well.

Mike could a P3 gauge that uses the OBD2 interface be interfering with the JB4 connection if I stacked it on top?

You can be a brave man and hard wire your JB4 into the ODBII harness under the dash leaving the ODBII port vacant for your P3 .

Hardwiring or plugging into OBD port have same effect as jb4 is concerned - canbus conflict and jb4 switches off.

I had the same dilemma on my 6MT car. What I did was feed the cable through the grommet for the trunk release. If you wiggle a coathanger in there, with a little finesse and a lot of tape, you can feed the cable through.
