Hi everyone,

Have a UK spec 230i and whilst I didn’t expect to get the figures BMW claimed on fuel economy, I’m getting quite a bit lower than I expected.

Over 100 mile mostly highway at 70-90mph I’m getting about 30-33MPG when BMW claim closer to 40-50.

I really expected to get into the high 30s at least. Im not worried about the extra cost but more curious if this is the sign of a potential problem with my car?

What are you other 230i owners averaging?

Disclaimer: My MPG figures are in UK MPG US equivalent would be that I’m getting between 25-27 US MPG.

How many miles do you have? Some forum members reported getting better fuel economy after break in period. Also, not sure about UK, but winter gas mixtures cause a hit on the MPGs

I’m at about 300 miles. I did consider break in being a factor. Was a little worried maybes I’d ruined the car as I’ve done a bit of spirited driving and gone to 6k revs maybe 3 times.

I did figure out I’m getting better economy than I thought though. I was using the my BMW app in gal/lit but I realised it was in US gallons. Switched it to Litres and KM and after conversion I’m at about 30-31 US MPG on highway at 80 mph. Give or take. My average MPG Is still quite low at 23 US MPG but I’ve been doing a few short journeys and sporty drives so they’re likely to blame.

Gonna try a highway cruise tomorrow in normal driving settings and see how much better I do.

I have a US spec 2022 230i with about 10K miles on it. My car is an M Sport with the M Differential, Dynamic Handling Package, 19" wheels and all that.

I commute about 50 miles a day to work and back, mostly on what you'd consider "b" roads but with some highway driving and I average in the low 30's without trying. I track my mileage using and app on my phone and have recorded as high as 41 mpg on a long road trip and as low as 18 when the car was new'ish and being driven hard on country roads. Your mileage will improve as the engine breaks-in, give it time.

That’s great to know sounds like it will improve. Is that US MPG?

Also any idea if I may have ruined break in by doing a few sporty drives and going over 4k revs a couple of times?

That sounds about right. 40-50 maybe in Eco mode, but even then at lower speeds than you're doing.

US MPG? That seems crazy high compared to what I’m getting

Correct - US MPG and although I am no expert, I doubt you have damaged your engine by going over 4 or 5,000 rpm here and there. Be gentle on it during the break-in period and don't get too carried away, but I think you'll be fine.

Okay it sounds like my car is still on the low end of the fuel economy but hopefully will see an improvement after the break In

If it helps, I have the M240 and that seems to have got better over the past few months. When it was under 500 miles it was averaging sub-30MPG (possibly not helped by me coming from a Cayman GTS and M2 before that, so learning the car). The car has now hit just over 2K and on a 55 mile London to Berkshire run, at speeds averaging 70ish it delivered 33mpg, so I certainly think I could get better as I had a few blips, but the car is delivering better MPG as she breaks in.

Now, if someone could tell me if I can activate the Adaptive Cruise, I have all the parts, it just didn't have the steering buttons (Radar is all there and plugged in), chip shortage meant it was pulled from the order at the last minute, but the only bit that appears to be missing is the steering wheel buttons!! The car has every other option, so frustrating ;-)

It’s good to hear break in is making a difference. I was shocked because being a 230i I was expecting it to outperform the M240i in fuel.

I’m Berkshire based too by the way! Maybe we should meet up and get some pictures with the cars?!

Sure, I'm Newbury way, we have a great little car meeting place called the Podium, we could meet one weekend for a comparison and chat?

I followed another G42 (I assume an M240) into Thatcham last weekend, private plate in Midnight Purple (same as mine). It seems there are three or four G42's in the surrounding villages. I'm around at the weekend, could catch up then.

I get in the low 40s on my mostly highway commute and high 20s/low 30s around town. My (calculated) average over ~2,000 miles is 32.4 MPG. I did not see any significant improvement after break-in - my car has been achieving those numbers since day one (took delivery with 80 miles on it). I never use EcoPro - it's probably 80% Comfort mode, 20% Sport+.

Okay that’s interesting. I’m getting nowhere near that.

Averaging 26 US mpg (31 UK) over 400 miles. Granted it’s a much smaller data set so will see how it progresses. And 32 US MPG (38 UK) on highway.

That seems rather poor MPG given what the B48 is normally putting out (and backed up by peeps here).

I have the the B58 and even letting it warm up for a couple minutes before I leave for the work (to defrost it, essentially), I'm averaging around 21.5-22. Given the winter blend of fuel, and it's rated for 23MPG city... That's perfectly fine. Just under 700 miles on the clock.

You’re right it does seem low. It’s brand new though so I can’t see why there would be an issue. Maybe I’ll call my dealer.

I was getting a constant 38-39mpg US during the spring/summer/fall. It's fallen to 35-37mpg on the winter gas here. That's 50% "B" roads in comfort @45-50mph and 70-90mph in ECO on the highway.

Best ever was 45.8mpg. Cruise set to 74mph for ~200 miles in ECO.

Where do you find MPG in the BMW app?

You can scroll down on the main page and it will give to your journeys with a fuel consumption measured in either gal/100km or l/100km

Wow you’re getting significant better than me I’m doing about half that efficiency.

For those who might be interested regarding fuel economy... This past weekend I did a 185 mile trip (twice... to my destination and return), almost exclusively on interstate highway and drove my 2022 BMW M240i with about 4000 miles on the odometer. I set the driving mode to the most economical setting, Eco Pro... and I drove as normally as possible for me on the highway, which for me is more aggressive than most drivers... no tailgating, and no unsafe lane changing. I dove as fast as 105mph, and used cruise control when the traffic density was appropriate...I do not have adaptive cruise control, nor would I want it. I never once had vehicle traffic which required me to slow down unless I wanted to. The results as recorded and noted on my BMW were an average of 73.9 MPH, and 32.0 MPG. So... the MPG experienced on my trip was equal to the fuel economy rating as reported by BMW on the car, 32 MPG highway. So this trip at least proves that our cars will hit their manufacturer's reported Highway MPG, and Eco Pro mode is the setting that accomplishes the reported Highway MPG. And just as a note regarding how I drove my M240i during the first 4000 miles... when I drive in-town, I don't do much highway driving, I almost always use the adaptive mode, and I turn off the annoying setting that shuts off the engine. I drive on the aggressive side, and usually experience anywhere from 20 to 22 MPG. The car is rated at 23 for city driving, which likely is with Eco Pro turned on, which I would never do in-city. So in conclusion... I would say that My 2022 BMW M240i does experience the fuel economy as reported by BMW... Safe and fun travels to all!!

Garage List
My example, trip to Scotland on Sunday, eco pro mode, with a nice twisty bit of sports plus. Mainly motorway, Quite a few roadworks and average speed cameras, sticking to the national limits. The trip was around 420 miles. One person in car and boot full of bags / backpacks. Ended up doing 36 mpg, not bad for an m240i xdrive. I think with a change in driving habit would squeeze out 37, maybe 38. Didn’t buy this to be economical, would ended up with a diesel if that was my priority. Got to do it all again next weekend!
