I have a road trip coming up and I’m looking for ideas as to how you organize “stuff” in your trunk. Egg crate? Plastic tote?

Will be taking window cleaner, spray on wax, microfiber towels, LED shop light, etc.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions and pictures.

We use bathroom countertop baskets because they have soft dividers (no rattles). You can line them up and carry unique items in each section with little noise and relative organization. Not perfect or manly but they work.

Went a bit overboard packing car care stuff when I first got for instance a Porsche 996 Turbo.

But I learned and left that stuff at home on subsequent trips.

For cleaning the windshield I used the windshield cleaner (scrubber/squeegee) at the gas station. This removes the bugs. Then if the car was really dirty I'd find a DIY car wash and the bugs on the other surfaces would come right off with a blast of soapy water spray. (I never used the brush.)

I'd follow this with a rinse and then a no spot rinse. Be sure after to drive the car and use the brakes to make sure the brake hardware is *dry*.

Sure once I got home I'd give the car a better hand wash but trying to keep the car in showroom clean condition on the road takes too much time.

For essentials -- spare oil, small funnel, mechanics shop gloves, leather gloves -- I get a plastic tub with a lid with the tub deep enough I can carry the oil bottles upright. With a bit of creative bungee cord usage I can secure the tub in the trunk so it doesn't move around nor can it fall over. In bigger cars I put the tub into a plastic "crate" -- the ones designed to hold hanging file folders work well.

So the tub has the oil and stuff in it and the bungee cords (or crate and cords) holds the tub from moving about.

The rest of the trunk is available for whatever. Mostly soft luggage.

Second is a pic of a plastic "crate" that the tub could go into. The crate is bigger and in a smaller car takes up "valuable" space.

Honestly, I guess oil upright in a enclosed container that will always stay upright is sort of safe, but it's really not worth losing real estate for a "just in case I need it scenario" as you'll find a gas station, target, etc that sells oil should you really need it. I will strongly suggest against topping off oil and leaving an open container in a car, regardless if it's within another sealed container. Just toss it and eat the inexpensive $5 loss. Oil spilling is just messy whether inside or outside of the sealed container.

Next, don't use egg crate as the bottom edges have sharp or 90 degree angles. Any wiggle from bumps, turning, etc causes micro shifts which dig and scrape away at your trunk carpet.

Until you learn from your own personal experience, you'll never do it again.

I had an excellent adjustable storage system on my 2010 VW GTI. They were these plastic "corners" with hard velcro underneath, that worked perfectly with the VAG carpeting. The beauty of the system was you could infinitely adjust the size and shape of what the holders held in place.

Unfortunately, their "hook and loop" fastener only worked with that VW type of carpeting. Been searching for a BMW compatible one forever, but no luck so far.
