Plenty of people prefer the look of the G20 M340i over the G80, so this is not exactly the first time some people like the design of the non-M better.
Don’t get me wrong, the G42 is awkward as well, just a lot less than the G87. We thought BMW the M3 and M4 was controversial, I think BMW really went out of there way with the G87. There’s a lot more to talk about with the G87 aesthetically than there is with the G80/82 with just the grille.

G42 rolled out first and I think we all wanted to see the G87 be lighter, quicker and have a more communicative steering, that's all. But as far as looks, I agree, buy whatever tickles your fancy more. Some like to stick a double-decker spoiler on their ride and while it's not my thing, as long as it yields them biting their lip every time they look at it, more power to them.
I like things about both cars. But when I read all the G87 hate from G42 owners I cringe. Because even if the feelings are genuine, it’s just not a convincing angle from the outside. Imagine being at cars and coffee and hearing a stingray guy “I just really don’t like the look of the Z06, that’s why I went with the stingray.” 😂 the V6 mustang guy “I just like to build something different and unique. Anyone can be fast with a GT500”, and so on. Its not a good look at all. I don’t want to be associated with it.

I feel like if someone can’t appreciate their car in a vacuum, without having to throw other ones under it, then maybe it’s themselves they are trying to convince.

It was never just the grille for many, but it definitely overshadowed the other issues. Beating a dead horse at this point so I'll just leave it at that.

As someone that has an M240 on order I really don’t understand mentioning the M2. Why? Just say this kit looks good. Who cares about the M2. It’s irrelevant to this post.

These are great looking parts - for someone who prefers to dress their car in CF. I wish more parts were available in the mold of these parts but in a more conservative finish.

I've noticed that people who love the look of the M2 are more easily able to express their opinions of it without simultaneously feeling the need to talk trash about other cars. I wonder why that is.

Probably because the M2 foundation came from this car. Just like the Regular 3 series and G80. It’s not like a random model comparison of an an M4 to a 240. The same was done with M340i in comparison to how the New M3 looks. I think people wanted the front of the Non M versions with the M everything else so it gets discussed.

Not sure if you're serious

But...

The simple answer is everywhere. Many of them just aren't on these forums and don't spend time looking at/discussing cars on the internet. Some that will love it don't even know the car exists yet. As much as people crap on polarizing automobile designs online (guilty myself, doing better), in reality people will only have positive things to say while out and about. I'm sure most Mk V Supra, Nissan Z, G8x, even G42 owners, to name a few, will tell you that they are shown a lot of love and only the occasional hate, if any at all. Of course some people won't go out of their way to tell you how much they hate your car in person or others simply don't care what anyone is driving or what it looks like, but I fully expect the look of the G87 to be far more loved than hated when all is said and done.

Comparing this to the M2 makes plenty of sense to me. It's an idea of what could have been with the G87 if BMW had taken the same approach as they had in the past by modifying the look of the existing 2-series.

So a lowered m240i with sleek after market kit looks better than a bone stock M2. I think my IQ is too low to figure why.

Compare it to the fully optioned M Performance version then.

Still has those boxy lower vents & kidneys though, but from that perspective it is an improvement in appearance.

It wouldn't have been a bad idea if BMW chose to use the G42 front and rear bumpers and just added subtle tweaks, like they did with the F87. Unbiased and not hating, but from a 100% stock perspective the G42 does look much better.

Given the level of performance, appearance, and $20K cheaper price tag that comes with the G42 I am glad I didn't pay & wait for a G87.

eww the body kit makes the g42 look too much like an f87 and that's just gross, and it all just looks worse than the grills on the g80/2, and what is with BMW these days I hate their designs yet I can't stop looking at bimmerpost every day so I can bitch about it and hijack completely unrelated topics.

Because anything will look better than the m2.

Right here and I’m trading in my G42 for a G87 like several others are. It has already been pointed out but it’s quite odd that an aftermarket company is coming out with a body kit for the G42 and people are immediately comparing it to the M2. This same company is developing a body kit for the M2 and I didn’t see anyone mention how it looks in comparison to the G42, they just commented on HOW it looks.

I personally think the new M2 looks better because looks are completely subjective and I like the details of the bumpers that some people don’t like. Just like the posters in here who think the G42 looks better, we’re all entitled to our own opinions.

These discussion about looks are so pointless. Looks are subjective. There’s a reason there is more than one flavor of ice cream.

The front looks like a few teeth were knocked out of its mouth. Would love to see one in the wild. Saw a BSM 240i the other day driving by with black wheels. Super nice. Head turner.
